How To Deal With 404 Error Page

Posted By: Poketors - September 13, 2013
The 404 error page is shown whenever a server is not able to find the specified page. Unfortunately, most users or the marketers think it as a technical issue and don't try for second time. Nobody considers 404 and give importance to it. But in reality, 404 pages have negative aspects if neglected and can affect your site performance badly.
Are 404 errors relevant to marketers and how to avoid the issue? Here are some considerations which can be implemented :

Controlling 404 :

We can control it but we can never eliminate the problem entirely. If you clean you internal link structure and make all relevant and proper links, even you can't make sure that people won't mistype your URLs.

You have a very narrow opportunity to control your URLs because other websites may have some links to your site. If you really want changes in other websites's backlinks then you have to  contact every website owner to make their posts links up to date, which is indeed a tiresome job. But it is very embarrassing when your own internal links land a user to 404 page, which is in fact totally under your control.

How To Find Out 404 Pages?

So you have to fix the 404 issue and to find out which of your pages are currently showing a 404, you can either check your Google Webmaster Tools account or use a tool like 404 Checker. Here you have the option to check each of these pages and replace any internal links with a valid and relevant link.

There are some tools also which can be helpful in determining 404 pages, such as Screaming Frog, Link Sleuth etc. Using a browser extension like Check My Links which can be found in Chrome Web Store, you can quickly identify internal broken links.

But you have to find the source of broken links to fix this issue. Google Webmaster Tools is the best option for 404 errors and will help you not only find broken links, but the source of those broken links also.

SEO Practices On 404 Error :

301 Redirect :

Most of the website owners use 301 redirect to land the home page for their readers rather than showing them 404 error page. It can be a safe option but not the best one.

If you have a page on your website that is viewed by large number of viewers, comprises of relevant links and information, but due to some reason you've decided to remove the page. In this kind of situation you should use the 301 to redirect the search engines and reader to an alternative page with the same topic rather than home page.

External Links :

External links should be corrected at the source. So you should reach out to the website owners and ask them to correct the linking URL or suggest a replacement page which will redirect to your site's alternate page.

Showing 404 Page :

It's actually useful to show your visitors the 404 page. In case your readers who are returning to 404 and you want them to land to your company's website, you should return to a 404 page which will be helpful and informative.

How To Create A Good 404 Page ?

You can easily create a 404 page just like other pages you created for your website. If you create it for some positive purpose, you have to look into the following things:

1. Look And Appearance :

The page should look similar to the other pages you have in your site as if someone come to that page they should not think by its look that the page is not a part of your website. Keep viewers engaged into that page by giving information regarding your products and services so that viewers should not close the window leaving your site.

2. Content :

Some re-assurance statement and a good welcome message should be there in the page so that visitors can be redirected to other pages by the links embedded on 404 page.

3. Relevant Links :

With good content try providing the most relevant links or give them an option to search within your site. Giving relevant links would also help you to explore your products and offer services to your viewers.

Keep A Positive Approach :

The 404 page will appear only when a mistake has been made. Instead of being very careful, these mistakes will happen. But you have to keep your visitors engaged to your website. Take the whole responsibility and make required changes to avoid 404 issues.

You can always turn your mistakes into positive side like the companies who did this. Check out some innovative 404 pages here. You can also offer your visitors to play some space invaders.

If you design 404 page in the right way, it can help re-engage your visitors and continue their positive experience on your website with an opportunity for more pageviews.

5 Basic SEO Practices Before Posting An Article

Posted By: Poketors - September 12, 2013
You might be publishing articles on regular basis or in certain intervals in a week. Whatever might be the fact, you should ensure few things before you post anything on your blog for SEO purposes. If you want your blog to come in better rank on Google SERPs then you must follow the five important and 'must do' basic practices before posting .
Here are the five tips :

1. Catchy Post Title :

Consider a post title "How To Improve Skills On Content Marketing". How does it impact on the people who are searching for articles on "Content Marketing"? Yes! the title will definitely draw the attention of viewers. So in addition to good article "proper post title" helps a lot in bringing audiences for your blog. It increases your website’s traffic resulting better rank in SERPs.

2. URLs Optimization :

Set proper permalink optimization which will be in great help for the URLs you share on SERPs. Keep all the URLs short with target keywords of the topic so it appear on the search results.

3. Old Post Interlink :

This is one of the best common practices which is useful to keep your viewers stick to your site. It often works better than related articles list. Eventually it increases page views and let viewers stay on your blog for longer time.

4. Grammar and Spelling :

A very common mistake by the bloggers is related to their grammar usage in their posts. This is the most required prerequisite for writing a good article. Before you post any article just check the spelling and grammar. Wrong spelling, grammatical errors, and poor sentence making will give a negative impression of your blog to the viewers even if it consists of useful and informative topics.

5. Image Embedding :

Always keep in mind that viewers will like the post which will have proper information with relevant images. Just think about a post without any image? Looks dumb. But when you use image to your article it makes your post look good and interesting. Keep a short description for the image while embedding to your article.

This article is a basic quick reference guide which will be helpful to the budding bloggers. If you want to know some advanced tips here is an article which will help you in improving skills on content marketing.

How To Get Higher PageRank In Google

Posted By: Poketors - September 03, 2013
Have you ever thought that billions of posts are published daily over the net and how many of the websites get higher rank in SERPs? Actual answer is very few. PageRank (PR) comes in numbers which can be less or more but one thing is sure that we can easily make difference in numbers by following some regular SEO activities.

Why Not Getting Higher Rank ?

This is a common question from a large number of bloggers who posts regularly with rich content but don't get noticed in Google SERPs with higher PageRank.

There is no specific answer to this question because a lot of things are involved to rank higher : like - unique content, regular posts, proper page design and loading on browsers, regular SEO jobs on blogs and some more.

We have tried our best to figure out some of the reasons. Here we go :

1. Googlebot Crawling :

Google' algorithm "Googlebot" or Google spiders don't search for the links what all bloggers post or don't roam the web. They request web servers to provide specified pages, then they scan them for hyperlinks, which in turn will lead them to the new documents that they fetch in the same way. In short Googlebot crawls for the links.

2. Google Indexing :

Even after crawling, we can't search the pages because they are not properly indexed. It totally depends on the keywords that we use for the articles. Google builds indexes for the articles with specific keyword. If you use the keyword "technology" in some of your blog posts, then Google will index them under "technology" keyword.

3. Google Ranks Articles :

It depends on the relevancy of the articles posted and Google rank them accordingly.

If you search with the string "android tablets", it will show in search engine result pages (SERPs) by following two steps :

a) It will find the "android tablets" related pages.
b) It will rank them with relevant topic.

How Relevancy Is Ranked By Google ?

The most asked question for website owners is "why is my not ranking high on SERPs? " Normally it is found that  Google tries to find pages that are both reputable and relevant.

How Do You Know The Website Relevancy ?

It basically depends on the concept that how well you optimize the page itself that will determine whether and how highly it’ll show up in Google search results. Usage of keywords, meta tags, description help to optimize it.

What to Do In This Situation ?

1. Focus On Niche :

Readers for your blog and Google would love you if you stay on the niche on which you write. Suppose your niche / topic is "technology" then don't write articles on topic "traveling". Keep focussing on your niche "technology" only. Google ranks web pages only and not the websites.

2.  On-Page Optimization :

It is the process by which you can inform Google that what your page contains. If you update the title, meta tags and description of the web page then it will be easier for Google bot to list the pages in SERPs accordingly.

Use specific keywords, tags and description for the pages you are publishing over net so that Google bot can find your pages relevant to the search made by viewers.

Improving Web page Factors :

Here we would like to suggest some on-page factors which can be useful for getting higher ranks in Google SERPs :

1. SEO Optimization :

You have to work on the SEO factors to get more engaged with Google SERPs. You can explore the page's SEO opportunities like page title, description, post related info, keywords, tags etc.

2. SEO Tools :

You can use the SEO tools because Google keeps changing its algorithms very often. If you use the SEO tools then no need checking recent Google algorithm changes as your SEO tools will be doing it for you.

3. SEO Outsourcing :

It would be a costly option but again time saving. If you want to focus more on content writing rather than SEO optimization then hire some company to do it for you.

4. Leave it to Google :

Once you have done with your SEO optimization practices then leave it to Google where your pages would be crawled in an organic way with increasing your ranking on SERPs.

How To Use 301 Redirects & Canonical Attributes

Posted By: Poketors - August 16, 2013
When should you use 301 redirects on your website? When is the rel=canonical attribute the better solution? Sometimes it becomes necessary to redirect pages in a website or blog. This article will help you understand the two main techniques for setting redirection of a page on your website.
How To Use 301 Redirects & Canonical Attributes

There are basically two approaches which can be used to practice this :

i) 301 redirect and
ii) rel="canonical" attribute

These redirection methods are used to manage duplicate contents issue without losing page ranking and viewers will be same.

Difference between 301 And Canonical

These two options have been around since years and sometimes it creates really confusion regarding when and how to use it in search engines. Google has provided clear guidelines on using redirection options. Lets know how do they interact with other search engines and Google :

301: Page is no longer available and move to a new page permanently. Unavailable page can be removed from search engine index and new page can be indexed.

Canonical : Page has  similar versions of content but only one preferred page should be indexed while other versions will be available for viewers.

Now lets discuss in details.

301 Redirects :

Matt Cutts from Google said, you'll lose "just a tiny little bit, not very much at all" which "doesn't change over time". 301 redirects explain viewers and search engines that original page is no longer available

and new page is having all the relevant and latest information. 301 is complete and permanent redirection of page.

Issues with 301 :

At the time of implementing 301 redirects, we face some issues like following.

1.  Without the access from server side, you can not use 301 redirects either it is HTTP status code or FTP access.
2. It takes time to attribute your new page as it depends on hoe many times your original page is crawled by search engines.
3.  Most of the bloggers and website owner use 301 to point all the pages of original website to pages of new website. It could result in high bounce rate and accordingly losing viewers. But again this 301

redirection is the only permanent solution for page redirection.

Usage of 301 :
  • When you moving or replacing a page permanently.
  • Domain name changed or moved to other one.
  • While relevant content is there but getting message of expired contents and 404 pages.
Canonical Attribute :

Canonical attribute, the rel="canonical" attribute doesn't send the users directly to the new and relevant page. Instead of that it tells search engines that the preferred relevant page is there and can be visited.

You may have web pages with similar content and obviously search engines treat these contents as duplicate which is a danger zone for any website and can be banned in near future.  In this kind of situation we use rel="canonical".

If you have more than one web page for same product, the content would same. Say, you have two web pages and  one is listed when you search by product name and other is listed when you search by price.

In this case, you have two different URLs and Google or other search engines will list both of the pages. But by using rel="canonical" on the product name page you can declare that price page is the preferred page which can be viewed by the users.

There is chances to lose PageRank while using canonical redirects. Matt Cutts has also said "there's really not a whole lot of difference" between the 301 and the rel="canonical". The 301 and the canonical will lose "just a tiny little bit, not very much at all" of credit from the referring page.

Issues with Canonical :

Compared to 301 redirects, re="canonical" has some limitations like :

1. In some SEPRs, you may still get the duplicate pages occasionally.
2. It is sometimes misused when implemented on pages which is not having large percentage of same content as canonical page. The rel="canonical" should not be used unless the number of duplicate contents is more.
3. In case of pages with multiple related content like having a single topic continued in different pages which use different unique URLs. Here the problem is it shows the very first page in SERPs ignoring the other relevant and informative pages.

Usage of rel="canonical" :
  • If 301 redirects method is taking time
  • There are two or more duplicate contents in SERPs but you want all of them visible
  • When single page is having dynamic multiple URLs
  • When you want two similar website live considering cross-domain.

Google treat both the method similarly but in best practice obviously 301 redirects method will be preferred.

Should We Include rel="nofollow" To Infographics, Widgets

Posted By: Poketors - August 15, 2013
Do you think that Google considers all the infographics, widgets, counters, badges and embedded codes as good SEO practices? it has been a topic for discussing since couple of months among webmasters. Now Google's Iconic Matt Cutts has explained about it and advised webmasters with the things they can do.
Should We Include rel="nofollow" To Infographics, Widgets
What should we do with embeddable codes in things like widgets and infographics? Should we include the rel="nofollow" by default? Advert the user that the code includes a link and give him the option of not including it?

Yes! this was the question asked to Matt Cutts and he has come up with some interesting information.  Cutt says “My answer to this is colored by the fact that we have seen a ton of people trying to abuse widgets and abuse infographics. We've seen people who get a web counter, and they don’t realize that there’s mesothelioma links in there."

Check out the video for more details on Matt Cutts' awesome tips to bloggers and webmasters.

“Is the keyword text sort of keyword rich and something where the anchor text is really rich or is it just the name of your site? That sort of stuff.”

Cutts replied “I would not rely on widgets and infographics as your primary way to gather links, and I would recommend putting a nofollow, especially on widgets, because most people when they just copy and paste a segment of code, they don’t realize what all is going with that, and it’s usually not as much of an editorial choice because they might not see the links that are embedded in that widget".

As per him a lot of issues come from people who are using counters, widgets, badges and don't relaize the fact that there are some embedded codes with link back to some site.

He also added “Depending on the scale of the stuff that you’re doing with infographics, you might consider putting a rel nofollow on infographic links as well. The value of those things might be branding. They might be to drive traffic. They might be to sort of let people know that your site or your service exists, but I wouldn’t expect a link from a widget to necessarily carry the same weight as an editorial link freely given where someone is recommending something and talking about it in a blog post."

Continuing his sugesstions, he also explains "I know plenty of sites have tried to use infographics as link bait, but I do feel like there are a few inforgraphics out there that deserve follow links simply because they are so useful and full of great information,” he adds. “Unfortunately spammers abused the potential of infographics and the rest of us have to play by the new rules."

Do you think that Google has gone too far with nofollow usage? Or it will be a fair practice for SEO purpose.

What Are SEO Friendly URLs?

Posted By: Poketors - November 03, 2011
Bloggers are usually concerned about their websites because they always think whether they have good URLs which are very much user friendly or not. In fact a lot of bloggers do change the URLs regularly for better SEO impact. But the thing is that this is not at all recommended to change the URLs as it hardly impacts on SEO.

How does it impact on changes made for URLs :

Most of the bloggers prefer making SEO friendly URLs before launching it. And doing this is not wasting time as it directly has an impact on website traffic. So it is always recommended to make you website's URLs SEO friendly.

Sometimes we can ignore the changes when we feel that the URL is not that much bad in terms of SEO concerns because we may have loss of traffic and damage our website.

Some of the reasons for changing URLs slightly are mentioned below:

1. Changes of Keywords

We are aware of the following link type:
http://example.com/product.php?id=12345&color=2&size=2&session=54321
It is not like that where Google won't find the URL but it is not user friendly as it has no keywords in it. Google will list it in its search engine with dynamic id and session but it is difficult to remember. So for SEO point of view these type of URLs should have to be changed.

Now consider the URL below :
http://example.com/blog.php?topic=how-to-swim
With the following one :
http://example.com/blog/how-toswim
Now the question is that, which can be considered as the best one. Though both the URLs are having keywords but a little difference is there. We suggest to go for second option if your blog is new and under construction. It requires specific URL. And if your blog is already have a good status in Google search or in the web and it is established already then either of them would work. No matters which one you use.

2. Structure of the URL

Most of the bloggers have an idea that the page with the category URL would better work in Google search as per as the SEO is concerned. But this is not at all the real scenario as Google will take time to list the page which is having sub page inside a category from the main domain, which makes an URL unnecessarily big where Google always prefer short URL. It is not at all recommended to publish an article which is some steps away and separated by pages from main domain. See the example below.
http://example.com/health/fitness/how-to-swim
is not at all a better URL than the following one
http://example.com/how-to-swim
3. Length of the URL

In many cases this is overlooked but in fact this is the most important thing when publishing a content with the URL. We suggest to have some simpler and short URL. Though all the internet browsers support at the maximum limit of characters which you will never reach but still for better ranking in search result you should maintain some user friendly and short URL.

Longer URLs have disadvantages as follows:
  • Normally most of the social media applications cut off the URL.
  • If it is not user friendly then there is always a possibility of cut off while copy pasting the link by users
  • Longer URLs can not be remembered easily
  • CTR and usability are always affected in longer URLs
What would be a better way to shorten the URL?

Consider the following URL
http://example.com/blog/posts/all-posts/post-looking-for-making-coffee
In the above example we can see that some of the words are repeated unnecessarily. We can easily avoid the repeating words.
http://example.com/blog/posts/all/looking-for-making-coffee
So the above one is much more better and useful URL for SEO purposes.

4. How to go for Stuffing Keywords

Using more than one keyword in a post page is wrong. Consider the following URL which has got 2 keywords for the particular post:
http://example.com/health/fitness/swim-how-to-swim
The above URL is totally unaccepted in purpose of SEO and doesn't make you rank better as here you are unnecessarily stuffing keywords. Using 2 keywords in a same post title looks like a smappy URL and might not get listed in Google search sometimes. So better to focus on the important things as per SEO is concerned and not stuffing keywords in an attempt to get listed quickly.

5. Suggestions :

We have already explained why changing every URL of an established website is risky and it harms your site ranking but if you want to do it after all, make sure you are doing it properly. Some of the things that are really important when changing your URLs are mentioned below:
  • 301 redirects
  • On page links update
  • New XML sitemap
  • Old XML sitemap
301 redirects are the very important part while changing the website URLs. These links are most important to the search engine specially in Google bot and you should update all the links.

Keeping XML is always good but we should not keep both the old and new XML files. We can remove the old XML file after 2-3 days. The new links will be automatically crawled by Google bot and can get in Google search result. If your 301 redirects are working properly then there is no reason to think of some duplicate contents.

So we hope that you have got a detailed idea about the SEO friendly URLs.

How To Solve Commonly Overlooked SEO Issues

Posted By: Poketors - October 07, 2011
There are some common overlooked issues which can be taken care at the time when we work on SEO but somehow we overlook them and later it creates lack of optimization issue. Here we go with the discussion on this topic:

1. Normally when we search for a site or info, a lot of links are displayed which are all pointing to the same location.

This happens only because these contents can be viewed by calling up on multiple URLs. Likewise in the most common ways this happens is by making both the www version and the without www version point to the same location. For example both "http://www.example.com/category"  and "http://example.com/category"  would display the same page.
How To Solve Commonly Overlooked SEO Issues
Here we can see the second URL doesn't contain the www. and shows only the main or root domain, whereas the first one is calling on the sub domain i.e. www.. In fact a lot of people don't realise that the www. is a subdomain in the same way like blog. or tech. can be treated as subdomain.

This doesn't seem any issue while seeing but may occur some issues if not correctly implemented.

2.  One of the major issues is that when you are displaying the exact same content on different pages across your site. This is basically known as Duplicate content. It can be an issue while indexing as you can end up with the search engines indexing half of your site with the www. format and the other half without. It may lead to penalties for your site by stating duplicate content.

This issues is most common with the homepage, with sites often having links to both the www. and non www. versions which in deed purely treated as duplicate contents.

How to correct it?

To solve this issue effectively, it is necessary to implement a canonical 301 redirect via a .htaccess file. By doing this you are redirecting any page that doesn't have the www. to the www. version or vice versa.

For this you site should be hosted on Linux for the redirect to work properly. If you are using any other platform then you need to have a look at redirecting through IIS: http://www.google.com/search?q=301+canonical+redirect+IIS

Find the below steps :

1. Create a new text document by opening up in notepad and save it as “.htaccess” (remember that it should not be .htaccess.txt or something like that). You should save it as ".htaccess" only.

2. Put this file to the root folder in your website.

3. Think and decide on whether to use www. or non www. as users are more familiar to www. rather than the non www. version. Hence we would recommend to use the www. version.

4. Put the proper code into the .htaccess file :

If you want to redirect "example.com" to "www.example.com" place this code in the .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain.com [NC]
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]
If you want to redirect "www.example.com" to "example.com" place this code in the .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain.com [NC]
RewriteRule (.*) http://domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]
5. Done with editing. Now please upload the modified file and test to make sure everything works fine. It is very much important point as 301 redirects can go messy if they are not properly configured.

All the 301 redirects pass on a major amount percentage of the weight of the page that is being redirected, so  this may help to minimize a lot of issues and give your blog or site pages a nice boost in the SERPs. Hope the article helped you to solve some common SEO mistakes.
