Which Is The Most Power Efficient & Battery Friendly Browser?

Posted By: Arin Dey - June 22, 2016
We all know that Google's Chrome browser and Mozilla's Firefox have been most used browsers in recent few years. But recently, Microsoft claimed that the recent number 1 browser Chrome may not be a friendly tool for your laptop's battery. In a battery test video, the software giant has pitted its Edge browser against Chrome, Firefox and Opera browsers by streaming the same HD video for hours.

Which Is The Most Power Efficient & Battery Friendly Browser?

The below results came up after the test (in hours : minutes : seconds):
  • Chrome: 4:19:50
  • Firefox: 5:09:30
  • Opera: 6:18:33
  • Microsoft Edge: 7:22:07
As per the above results, Microsoft proved that it's Edge browser lasted 70% longer than Chrome. It also claimed that even for non-video tasks, its browser lasts 36 to 53% longer than the rivals.

These tasks, as claimed by the company, include things like opening sites, tabs, reading emails, scrolling articles and watching small videos. Microsoft has also reportedly published data it collected from millions Windows 10 PCs. In a blogpost, the software giant claims, "We designed Microsoft Edge from the ground up to prioritize power efficiency and deliver more battery life, without any special battery saving mode or changes to the default settings."

According to the latest data from NetApplications, Chrome is now the most popular browser in the world. The browser has over 45% share in the market. The biggest loser, according to the study, is Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which went from 41.37% down to 38.6% during the month of May.

Microsoft is working to make Microsoft Edge even more efficient with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update soon. No doubt about that, once immensely popular Internet Explorer is almost dead now and a re-birth has been given as Edge to it. Let's see how it goes in it's journey ahead competing it's rivals.

Diwanji, who is a mom to daughters aged eight and 13, told the publication that “The big motivator inside the company is everyone is having kids, so there’s a push to change our products to be fun and safe for children. We expect this to be controversial, but the simple truth is kids already have the technology in schools and at home. So the better approach is to simply see to it that the tech is used in a better way.”

The project is full-time and Google is eagerly planning it to get set go, Diwanji didn't confirm that when parents can see the new services to be introduced.

She added “We want to be thoughtful about what we do, giving parents the right tools to oversee their kids’ use of our products. We want kids to be safe, but ultimately it’s about helping them be more than just pure consumers of tech, but creators, too.”

Google Chrome "Update Server Not Available" Errors

Posted By: Arin Dey - July 03, 2014
Google Chrome has been the user friendly and widely used internet browser in the world. A lot of features are embedded into it to serve its users better and better. It is updated in a regular basis to protect users with security measures and fixing the bugs. But we often see some errors while updating. Sometimes you might see an error when trying to check for updates in Google Chrome's "About Google Chrome" box.
Google Chrome "Update Server Not Available" Errors
Here are the error codes that you usually get during Chrome update.

1. Update server not available (error: 1)

Issue : It means that Google Chrome can't be upgraded in its current directory.

Solution : You have to check which version of Google Chrome you're running by looking at the version number in the About Google Chrome box.

If the box lists something other than "Google Chrome" (e.g. "Chromium"), then this error is expected. Only Google Chrome supports updating. You can download Google Chrome from http://www.google.com/chrome. Chromium is what you get if you download the source code and build the browser yourself, or copy a build from someone who built it from the source.

2. Update server not available (error: 3)

Issue : It means that Google Chrome fails to communicate with Google Update.

Solution : You have to check if you're running Vista/ 7 and you have configured Google Chrome to always run as administrator. This is a known issue with the Google Chrome auto-updating mechanism and can be avoided by simply running Google Chrome as a normal user.

3. Update server not available (error:4)

Issue : It means some unexpected issue.

Solution :  Check the details in help forum.

4. Update server not available (error: 7)

Issue : It means the update was downloaded successfully, but it failed to install properly.

Solution : You can try restarting your computer. Then check your Windows Task Manager and see if GoogleUpdate.exe or GoogleUpdateOnDemand.exe appears in the list of processes. Then you can try updating again through the browser again.

Checking for update never completes

In case you observe the message "Checking for updates" and a little icon that spins forever, it means that Google Update was unable to communicate with Google Chrome.

The ultimate solution for this issue is you must be using the latest version of Google Chrome, You can download from http://www.google.com/chrome.

If these steps don't fix the problem, you are required to report the problem to Google Chrome team and wait for an update on that issue.

Can Google Chrome Listen To You?

Posted By: Arin Dey - January 26, 2014
A very shocking fact was found for vulnerability in Google’s Chrome browser which allows websites to listen aka record a user through computer’s microphone secretly. Researchers have found that a software was made, which works on principle of speech recognition.

Tal Ater, a program developer on speech recognition discovered the exploit in Chrome’s speech recognition software on September 13, 2013. Within 10 days of the incident, Google released a patch on September 24, 2013.

Ater writes in a blog post, "On Sept. 24, a patch which fixes the exploit was ready, and three days later my find was nominated for Chromium’s Reward Panel (where prizes can go as high as $30,000). Google’s engineers, who’ve proven themselves to be just as talented as I imagined, were able to identify the problem and fix it in less than two weeks from my initial report. I was ecstatic. The system works. But then time passed, and the fix didn’t make it to users’ desktops. A month and a half later, I asked the team why the fix wasn’t released. Their answer was that there was an ongoing discussion within the Standards group, to agree on the correct behavior — ‘Nothing is decided yet.’”

As per Google, the fix was released but never implemented because Chrome complies with regulatory guidelines despite the vulnerability.

Google expressed the below statement to Engadget:

“The security of our users is a top priority, and this feature was designed with security and privacy in mind. We’ve re-investigated and this is not eligible for a reward, since a user must first enable speech recognition for each site that requests it. The feature is in compliance with the current W3C specification, and we continue to work on improvements.”

How about the bug on Chrome and how the exploit works?

Various malicious sites use pop-under windows which enables it to listen to Chrome users even after they have closed that website page or even closed the main browser window.

Ater added that “This window can wait until the main site is closed, and then start listening in without asking for permission. This can be done in a window that you never saw, never interacted with, and probably didn’t even know was there. To make matters worse, even if you do notice that window (which can be disguised as a common banner), Chrome does not show any visual indication that Speech Recognition is turned on in such windows — only in regular Chrome tabs.”

Ater published a video on Youtube, which shows how the exploit works.

Google has launched Chrome for Android Beta, which runs on your Android 4.0. It means that it only works on Ice Cream Sandwich OS phone or tablets. Speed

With Chrome for Android, you can search, navigate and browse fast—Chrome fast. You can scroll through web pages as quickly as you can flick your finger. When searching, your top search results are loaded in the background as you type so pages appear instantly. And of course, both search and navigation can all be done quickly from the Chrome omnibox.

Simplicity

Chrome for Android is designed from the ground up for mobile devices. Google re-imagined tabs so they fit just as naturally on a small-screen phone as they do on a larger screen tablet. You can flip or swipe between an unlimited number of tabs using intuitive gestures, as if you’re holding a deck of cards in the palm of your hands, each one a new window to the web.

One of the biggest pains of mobile browsing is selecting the correct link out of several on a small-screen device. Link Preview does away with hunting and pecking for links on a web page by automatically zooming in on links to make selecting the precise one easier.

And as with Chrome on desktop, Google built Chrome for Android with privacy in mind from the beginning, including incognito mode for private browsing and fine-grained privacy options (tap menu icon, ‘Settings,’ and then ‘Privacy’).

Signing in

You can now bring your personalized Chrome experience with you to your Android phone or tablet. Sign in to Chrome to bring your open tabs, bookmarks and omnibox data from your computer to your phone or tablet. That way, you have your Chrome, on all of your devices.

If you sign in to Chrome on your Android device, you can:
  • View open tabs: Need to step away from your computer? Access the tabs you have open on your computer right on your phone or tablet and pick up where you left off.
  • Sync bookmarks: Find your bookmarks on all of your devices. Quickly go to your favorite sites, no matter where you are.
  • Get smarter suggestions: Take your omnibox everywhere. Visit a site often on your computer and you’ll get an autocomplete suggestion for it on your phone, so you can spend less time typing.
  • Send to mobile: Send pages from your computer to your phone or tablet with a single click. You can read them on the go, even when you’re offline.
  • Auto sign-in: Automatically sign in to Google sites, like Gmail, for fast and seamless browsing. [source]
