Google Lauches Android N aka Nougat

Posted By: Arin Dey - July 04, 2016
Before the name revealed by Android team, all around the world - people were expecting the name should be Android Nutella but Google revealed via Twitter that N is actually for Nougat. Android tweeted as below to intimate all its fans about the new version of it and the new name.
Though Android will be made available to few of its own devices such as Nexus series and few sets of Motorola in the near future, but as per normal practice by Google - slowly Android N would be distributed among all the brands.

Most of the people are upset with the name because it is more obscure than Nutella, a brand most North Americans have heard of. Nougat, on the other hand, is a less familiar food. It is a chewy confection that is made with sugar or honey, nuts, egg whites and candied fruit. Check out the big unveiling in the video below.

Android N also known as Android 7.0, which is slated to launch later this summer, is currently in beta as users test out new features such as split-screen multitasking and a better notification shade. Android N also comes with Google’s VR platform, Daydream, and features a new version of Doze. It is again an amazing expected release by google for it's Android lovers.

The Telegraph’s sources say that Google is gearing up to design and manufacture a smartphone on its own – representing a major shift from its standard strategy of partnering with major handset makers like LG, Huawei and HTC to develop Nexus devices which is popular to showcase the Android platform.

The phone is expected to be launched near the end of this year; Google is believed to be in talks with mobile operators about the release. It’ll be interesting to see what this means for all the hardware firms Google partners with to build Android and Chrome OS devices, as well as for the Android platform itself.

Microsoft Introduces Cortana On Android And iOS

Posted By: Arin Dey - March 15, 2015
Microsoft is introducing Cortana app on Android and iOS. But before that it will be launched over Windows 10 with the digital assistant on desktop PCs. The software giant is still working on an advanced version of Cortana, and is using research from an artificial intelligence project called ‘Einstein’ to make the virtual assistant more effective and useful than Apple’s Siri. This advanced version will be used for the standalone Android and iOS apps.

Microsoft Introduces Cortana On Android And iOSMicrosoft has been promoting Cortana as a superior choice over offerings from Apple and Google. Microsoft operating systems group corporate vice-president Joe Belfiore has described Cortana as “the only digital assistant that gets to know you.”
He added that it “gets better over time by asking questions based on your behavior and checking in with you before she assumes you’re interested in something. She detects and monitors the stuff you care about, looks out for you throughout the day, and helps filter out the noise so you can focus on what matters to you."
Its very easy to use. Users can either speak or type to ask Cortana a question and ‘she’ will respond in turn.

How it works :

When a user interacts with Cortana for the first time, 'she' will learn the user’s name, how to pronounce it, and ask for some personal interests. The digital assistant uses the person’s answers to curate content that would be of interest such as train or bus timings for someone planning a trip, weather updates, the latest news, and even traffic information on routes and various important informations.

The digital assistant can also issue ‘people reminders’ such as a user can be reminded for an appointment with doctor. She can also help a user to make a video call in Skype, check the Facebook news feed and even sending tweets also. Lets see how it manages to win users hearts once it is available in the market.

OnePlus Launches OxygenOS And HydrogenOS ROMs

Posted By: Arin Dey - January 30, 2015
I
OnePlus announced its decision to have its own ROM after Cyanogen’s contract issue in India. Now the Hong Kong based company has finally revealed the name for its new ROMs – HydrogenOS or H2 OS which will be available in China and OxygenOS for the rest of the world i.e. Global. For the uninitiated, OnePlus kicked off its operations last year by teaming up with Oppo’s Color OS for China and Cyanogen OS for the rest of the world. Both the Oxygen OS and Hydrogen OS will be based on Android 5.0 Lollipop.

OnePlus Launches OxygenOS And HydrogenOS ROMs

Brandon H said in the official forum post:
With our ROM, that means software that is open, customizable, and free of bloat and unnecessary features.
How they named their ROM as OxygenOS :
As an element, Oxygen is the epitome of simplicity, yet it’s also extraordinarily powerful. Oxygen is all around us. It’s part of us and everything we do. It creates the water that carves out valleys and moves mountains. By itself, it’s simple and pure—a fundamental building block. But, as a part of something greater, it can do amazing things. Just like us.
OnePlus Launches OxygenOS And HydrogenOS ROMs

It is still not very clear that how OnePlus will differentiate between the OxygenOS and HydrogenOS. H2 OS might be excluding the Google Apps and services like other ROMs in China, and substituted with corresponding services while OxygenOS will be stuffed with GApps and services.

15 Best Custom ROMs For Your Android Device

Posted By: Arin Dey - August 27, 2014
A lot of custom ROMs for Android are available over the web for various Android devices. The only difference among all the ROMs is that some ROMs are only available for some specific devices and few ROMs for almost all devices. Popularity of ROMs depends on the supportability options on various devices. The more devices it supports the more it gets popular.

If you're looking to upgrade your Android device or you just want more control over the phone or tablet you own, you have to search for a new ROM. Rooting your smartphone is the first step, but a new ROM will give you a completely new OS experience.

15 Best Custom ROMs For Your Android Device

As you know that there are a lot of custom ROMs available and it is not possible to include each and every custom ROMs. All the ROMs are being researched and developed based on the Google’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This list includes almost all popular custom ROMs that are available for a variety of devices.
Warning! The ROMs are loaded with various features, you might come across some stability issues once they are installed. It is always recommended to take a proper backup of your personal data and contacts, messages, music, movies, files etc.

I have listed down some popular custom ROMs out there along with their features. You need to visit the official websites of the ROMs to know teh supportable devices list as it keeps changing.

1. CyanogenMod ROM

CyanogenMod is undoubtedly the most popular and the most downloaded custom ROMs available on Android platform. CyanogenMod has been around since the beginning and has gained more team members, device support and new features over the years. It has become a popular firmware for a number of devices based on the open-source Android operating system. Even it offers some amazing features that are not found in the official Android based firmwares on these smart phones. It is my all-time favorite custom ROM for almost all devices without any doubt.                                    Cyanogenmod for Android
Features : The various features include native theming support, FLAC audio codec support, a large Access Point Name list, an OpenVPN client, an enhanced reboot menu, support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering, CPU overclocking and other performance enhancements, soft buttons and toggles in the notification pull-down (such as wi-fi, Bluetooth and GPS), app permissions management, as well as other interface enhancements aspects.

2. MIUI ROM

MIUI is one of the most popular Android ROMs and a killer of CynogenMod. It is growing its popularity day by day. After the launch of Mi3 and Redmi 1S in the market, the name MIUI has become a well-known brand. MIUI is basically based on Android 4.x, featuring better experience.
                                  MIUI For Android
Features : It offers amazing themes from improving device performance to saving battery usage. MIUI is updated every Friday based on the feedback from its test users. Sometimes I personally prefer using MIUI because of its amazing look and feel with smooth performance for some specific devices.

3. Paranoid Android ROM

Paranoid Android is also an amazing ROM for flashing. This ROM was recently released but not a new name to people as within a very less time frame it gained the popularity. It will be the first ROM to be based on Android 4.2.2 JellyBean.
                                        Paranoid Android
Features : It includes a lot of additional features than other available ROMs. A few features are like changing colors according to apps which is good for personalization, setting DPI according to apps, 3 different user interfaces as tablet/phablet/phone UI.

4. AOKP ROM

AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project. It is a custom ROM distribution for several Android devices. The AOKP doesn’t needs any recognition as it is also an alternate choice for most of the people who moved from CynogenMod. AOKP ROM started in 2011 with Ice Cream Sandwich. So it is basically based on Android ICS. Obviously one of my favorites and based on a Nexus device. You can change the software key colors.
                                            AOKP For Android
Features : The AOKP has multiple features that can’t be explained with a paragraph. Once you install the ROM you will come to know. The main features include performance tweaks, customizable LED notifications etc. Several unique abilities of this ROM makes it stand aside from other ROMs.

AOKP ROM Official Download link : AOKP

5. Replicant ROM

Replicant is another distribution of Android custom ROM that is free. Most of the Android versions are licensed freely under the Apache License 2.0. The Linux core is mostly Free Software under the GPLv2. But there are some components of the default software stack on the devices that are proprietary software. It means any component that handles the hardware directly is proprietary software.
Replicant For Android
Features : Replicant Wiki offers you a list of open source apps that can be used to replace the proprietary Google apps (Market, Gmail, Maps, etc.). Even it suggests to use F-Droid instead of Google Market. Replicant lacks in location tracking. Due to some proprietary aspects it is less popular than other ROMs.

6. LiquidSmooth ROM

In case you are very much concerned about the megahertz and gigahertz aspects of devices then Liquid Smooth is the perfect ROM for you. The emphasis is purely on performance and speed – the UI has been pretty much entirely left alone like pure Android.

Liquid Smooth For Android

The Xylon ROM is another pretty fast and responsive ROM which is famous for its fast and easy to use shortcuts. The Xylon is another custom ROM that is built off of AOSP, that actually means that the ROM is based on stock ROM with a few features added over it.

                                    Xylon For Android
Features : Basically the features of FNV, CM, AOKP, Team BAKED, and Paranoid Android make up to be Xylon ROM . The ROM is very smooth and its reviews have revealed that the ROM is very much friendly with the Battery life and extends it at an unbelievable rate. Unfortunately he ROM is not so universal and is only available on the Google Nexus 4. This ROM needs a thumbs up from all of the Nexus 4 users.

Google's Next Android Release : "Android L" Features

Posted By: Arin Dey - June 27, 2014
This post will give you an advance look at the upcoming release for the Android platform, which offers new features for users and app developers. This post provides an introduction to the most notable android release. Android has grown from a small initiative to the world's dominant mobile OS platform with over a billion active users. Google keeps Android always up-to-date and has just unveiled what it calls the most ambitious Android release yet.

Google's Next Android Release : "Android L" Features
Here are some of the most exciting new features of Android L.

User Interface - Material Design :

The Android L includes support for material design apps. Material design is a comprehensive guide for visual, motion, and interaction design across platforms and devices. Android will receive a complete visual overhaul aimed at promoting a consistent experience across Android device sizes and types.

Material Design - Android L

This support includes below features :
  • Unique material theme
  • View shadows
  • The RecyclerView widget
  • Drawable animation and styling effects
  • Material design animation and activity transition effects
  • Animators for view properties based on the state of a view
  • Customizable UI widgets and app bars with color palettes that you control
Modified Notification Settings :

The notification system allows users to keep informed about relevant and timely events in your app, such as new chat messages from a friend or a calendar event. You will be able to interact with notifications more easily in Android L.

Notification - Android L

The visual and functional update includes :
  • Visual changes to notifications as part of material design
  • Notifications are now available on the device lockscreen, yet sensitive content can still be hidden behind it
  • A new presentation format called Heads-up for receiving high priority notifications while using the device
  • Cloud-synced notifications - act on a notification on your Android tablet and it is also dismissed on your phone.
Lockscreen Notifications :

Lockscreens can show notifications. Users can select via Settings whether to allow sensitive notification content to be shown over a secure lockscreen or not. All the notifications and their actions are bridged over to Android Wear devices by default.

Improved Battery Performance :

Android L will be having battery life better than its earlier versions. But Google's moves go beyond that to the app development stage, for which new tools have been developed that let developers track battery drain and optimise apps before they ever reach end users. The battery saver mode is similar to those implemented by third parties so far. The services can be turned off or made to run only at intervals in order to save power.

Advanced Camera Capabilities :

The new version introduces the new advanced camera features to facilitate fine-grain photo capture and image processing. You can now programmatically access the camera devices available to the system and connect to a specific device.

Easy Web Browsing :

A change can be noticed to the way individual tabs and documents in apps are handled by Android L. They'll now show up as individual entries in the Recents menu unlike its previous releases. This will allow users to jump directly between them.

New Android Runtime (ART) :

The version 4.4 release introduced a new, experimental Android runtime (ART). In Kitkat, ART was optional, and the default runtime remained Dalvik. With the L Developer Preview, ART is now the default runtime. ART is 64-bit compatible, and is also engineered to allow apps to work across hardware architectures such as ARM and X86. This also means that Android devices will be able to address more RAM than the 32-bit limit allowed.

Graphical Support For OpenGL ES 3.1 & Android Extension Pack :

Andorid L includes Java interfaces and native support for OpenGL ES 3.1. In addition to OpenGL ES 3.1, this release provides an extension pack with Java interfaces and native support for advanced graphics functionality. These extensions are treated as a single package by Android. Google has worked with major hardware vendors to enable more fluid graphics, potentially paving the way for new Android-based game consoles and set-top boxes.

Google Fit :

People nowadays are more keen on keeping health fit and fine. The new Google Fit framework will take Apple's Healthkit head on, tying into sensors on phones themselves as well as connected accessories to collect data which will be ready for apps to use. Major partners including Nike, Adidas, Runkeeper, HTC, Asus, LG and Motorola are already on board.

Better Android TV Apps :

Android offers pretty good experience that's optimized for apps running on large screen devices, such as high-definition televisions. Apps on TV offer new opportunities to delight your users from the comfort of their couch.

Below is a video which will show the Android L new look.

We have seen the performance and popularity of all the earlier released versions of Android and all of them did well in the market. Lets see how the new Android L makes noise in smartphone industry.
