15 Best Custom ROMs For Your Android Device

Posted By: Arin Dey - August 27, 2014
A lot of custom ROMs for Android are available over the web for various Android devices. The only difference among all the ROMs is that some ROMs are only available for some specific devices and few ROMs for almost all devices. Popularity of ROMs depends on the supportability options on various devices. The more devices it supports the more it gets popular.

If you're looking to upgrade your Android device or you just want more control over the phone or tablet you own, you have to search for a new ROM. Rooting your smartphone is the first step, but a new ROM will give you a completely new OS experience.

15 Best Custom ROMs For Your Android Device

As you know that there are a lot of custom ROMs available and it is not possible to include each and every custom ROMs. All the ROMs are being researched and developed based on the Google’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This list includes almost all popular custom ROMs that are available for a variety of devices.
Warning! The ROMs are loaded with various features, you might come across some stability issues once they are installed. It is always recommended to take a proper backup of your personal data and contacts, messages, music, movies, files etc.

I have listed down some popular custom ROMs out there along with their features. You need to visit the official websites of the ROMs to know teh supportable devices list as it keeps changing.

1. CyanogenMod ROM

CyanogenMod is undoubtedly the most popular and the most downloaded custom ROMs available on Android platform. CyanogenMod has been around since the beginning and has gained more team members, device support and new features over the years. It has become a popular firmware for a number of devices based on the open-source Android operating system. Even it offers some amazing features that are not found in the official Android based firmwares on these smart phones. It is my all-time favorite custom ROM for almost all devices without any doubt.                                    Cyanogenmod for Android
Features : The various features include native theming support, FLAC audio codec support, a large Access Point Name list, an OpenVPN client, an enhanced reboot menu, support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering, CPU overclocking and other performance enhancements, soft buttons and toggles in the notification pull-down (such as wi-fi, Bluetooth and GPS), app permissions management, as well as other interface enhancements aspects.

2. MIUI ROM

MIUI is one of the most popular Android ROMs and a killer of CynogenMod. It is growing its popularity day by day. After the launch of Mi3 and Redmi 1S in the market, the name MIUI has become a well-known brand. MIUI is basically based on Android 4.x, featuring better experience.
                                  MIUI For Android

4. AOKP ROM

AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project. It is a custom ROM distribution for several Android devices. The AOKP doesn’t needs any recognition as it is also an alternate choice for most of the people who moved from CynogenMod. AOKP ROM started in 2011 with Ice Cream Sandwich. So it is basically based on Android ICS. Obviously one of my favorites and based on a Nexus device. You can change the software key colors.
                                            AOKP For Android
Features : The AOKP has multiple features that can’t be explained with a paragraph. Once you install the ROM you will come to know. The main features include performance tweaks, customizable LED notifications etc. Several unique abilities of this ROM makes it stand aside from other ROMs.

5. Replicant ROM

Replicant is another distribution of Android custom ROM that is free. Most of the Android versions are licensed freely under the Apache License 2.0. The Linux core is mostly Free Software under the GPLv2. But there are some components of the default software stack on the devices that are proprietary software. It means any component that handles the hardware directly is proprietary software.
Replicant For Android
Features : Replicant Wiki offers you a list of open source apps that can be used to replace the proprietary Google apps (Market, Gmail, Maps, etc.). Even it suggests to use F-Droid instead of Google Market. Replicant lacks in location tracking. Due to some proprietary aspects it is less popular than other ROMs.

Features : Basically the features of FNV, CM, AOKP, Team BAKED, and Paranoid Android make up to be Xylon ROM . The ROM is very smooth and its reviews have revealed that the ROM is very much friendly with the Battery life and extends it at an unbelievable rate. Amazon Introduces Smartphones With AT&T

Posted By: Arin Dey - June 18, 2014
Amazon’s mystery product will be a Smartphone as predicted by most of the technologists. Some rumors are also there that it may have an exclusive carrier as AT&T. The Wall Street Journal reported that AT&T will be the only carrier for Amazon’s Smartphone, according to “people familiar with the plans.” The massively popular and one of the biggest telecom provider AT&T already provides wireless service to Amazon’s line of Kindle tablets and e-readers.
Amazon Introduces Smartphones With AT&T
Amazon released a YouTube video earlier this month to build anticipation but the clip is more about piquing interest than releasing details. A lot of these featured in the clip can be seen moving side-to-side while staring down at the screen of the unseen device, leading to speculation that Amazon is preparing to release a Smartphone with a 3D holographic display — a device which has been rumored to be in the works at Amazon’s Lab 126 facility in Cupertino, California for some time.

The WSJ also reported that the handset will use retina-tracking technology which is implanted in four front-facing cameras, or sensors. This, sources with knowledge of Amazon’s plans told the publication, would make some images appear to be 3D, much like a hologram.

Let's see the new face of Amazon's new device.

Windows Phone Includes Android As Dual OS

Posted By: Arin Dey - March 16, 2014
Now smartphone users are getting dual OS.  Huawei is already decided to keep on making Windows OS phones but the most happening news is that Android systems are going to integrate with present Windows OS. It means that users can get the opportunity to use both the OS according to their choices.

Windows Phone Includes Android As Dual OS

Shao Yang, Huawei’s CMO, told TrustedReviews.com “We are still committed to making Windows Phone devices”. He also added that Android devices are more popular on the market.

As per him a “dual OS” incorporating both Android and Windows on a Windows Phone would be the greatest move that the company has yet taken.

He added that “If it is Windows only, maybe people will not find it as easy a decision to buy the phone. If they have the Android and Windows together, you can change it as you wish and it is much easier for people to choose Windows Phone. We think the dual OS can be a new choice for the consumer. It will be on sale in the US in Q2.”

In January, at the Consumer Electronics Show, Intel displayed a chip created for such dual OS devices. It means that the concept is not new and not only used by Huawei but Intel may reveal their new products also.

Sexting Trend Is Rising Among U.S. Adults

Posted By: Arin Dey - February 05, 2014
Sexting is an act of sending sexually explicit messages or photographs, mainly between smart gadgets or mobile phones. McAfee has revealed 49 percent of U.S. adults use their smartphones to send suggestive photos and videos or some pornographic e-mails and texts.

Sexting Trend Is Rising Among U.S. Adults

50 percent of those admitted to storing the sexts and images they receive. Most of them or around 77 percent of sexters send the sexy content to their spouses or partners. 16 percent send it to complete strangers whom they never met with.

McAfee online security expert Robert Siciliano said in a blog post that “I’ve said this before … the rise of Smartphone usage has provided us with tons of convenience, but also brought about different risks we need to consider. Sharing intimate or racy information via mobile devices can set you up for potentially adverse situations.”

Sexting is very much observed with the 18- to 24-year-old group where 70 percent have received sexually suggestive content from someone. 13 percent of men more likely to use their handsets to send and receive such explicit content. 61 percent of men get engaged in such behavior compared to 48 percent of women.

Below is the detailed study on "how we expose ourselves to risk" done by McAfee:
how we expose ourselves to risk
Robert Siciliano in a blog post suggested some really useful things you’ll want to remember as we head into Valentine’s Day before sending that loving message.
  • Don’t share passwords with anyone, including romantic interests or family members. For those needing to share a password, create a unique code for the necessary account, and change it immediately if foul play is suspected.
  • Always use a PIN or passcode on a mobile device to prevent lost or stolen phones from revealing private information to unknown people who can misuse it.
  • "If you do send personal or intimate messages, take the time to delete the content from your mobile device and personal accounts as soon as possible. It doesn’t take that much time and it could save you years of damage control for your reputation."
  • Always think before you hit send, post, tweet, etc. that once you share private information it’s now out of your control and you can't do anything to protect your privacy.
Most of the US adults share nude photos and sexts on unsecured Smartphones. Siciliano referred this as “just asking for a social scandal".

Samsung, the biggest technology company in Asia, is going to to create a new industry of wearable devices as the market for top-end handsets nears saturation. It will compete with Sony which already introduced its wearable android watch.

The Galaxy Gear which will be released next month will not be having a flexible display, though the company is continuing to work on developing a bendable screen. It will be unveiled the same day as Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3, a phablet series gadget.

Apple Watch is also in the pipeline and Apple didn't revealed any date of release the product. Samsung became the world’s largest smartphone maker last year, overtaking Apple. But Apple is continuing its release on iPhone series and will be relesing iPhone5C (a low cost iPhone) and upgrades for iPhone5 (known as iPhone5S) according to rumored reports.
So as of now we have a rough idea that two smartphone giants are working on introducing smart watch. Lets wait for the devices and we will get to know more.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One

Posted By: Poketors - March 17, 2013
The biggest smart phone battle is now on the air. The recently crowned HTC One must prove itself against the mighty Samsung Galaxy S4. Will the HTC stay at the top or will its fall from its top position? Let's find out.
Overall View : Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One

In the one corner, you have the HTC One's rather wonderful aluminium body, which feels reassuringly strong, smooth and svelte thanks to relatively slim proportions. Somehow it looks a little industrial and retro from the front, which we love. You will be proud to show this device to friends.

In the Samsung corner, you get a the polycarbonate plastic the Galaxy S3 was encased in. Regardless of the technical name, it feels cheaper in the hand but it does at least mean the weight of the device is kept relatively low, which is probably a good idea when the display is as large as it is. In the S4's defence, it does do a splendid job of housing a gigantic display so you won't need to stitch on a clown pocket.

We've said it before and we'll harp on about it again: premium phones should feel premium in the hand, and the Galaxy S4 falls short in this area. A win for the HTC One here.

Hardware & Performance : Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One

If looks are largely irrelevant, the Samsung is going to impress you. You don't get a dual-core processor, or even a quad one ─ try an eight-core Samsung Exynos 1.6GHz monster comprised two quad core processors, 2GB of RAM and a powerVR SGX 544 graphics chip that will make Angry Birds and other mobile games run incredibly smoothly. Suffice to say, Samsung has once again set the pace for just how much power you can get into a phone, although the jury's out on whether all that power is noticeable or even needed.

Unfortunately for the HTC One, it was never going to win with four less cores but it's still a powerhouse in its own right. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core clocked at 1.7GHz and with an Adreno 320 GPU behind it, as well as 2GB of RAM, makes the One almost unrivalled when it comes to performance.

Ultimately, if anything can dethrone the HTC One for sheer grunt you will never use, it's the Samsung Galaxy S4 although the difference is unlikely to be great. The fact is, both phones are quicker than just about any other Android phone the world has ever seen, which is impressive. A win on paper for the Sammy here.

Screen : Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One

Another close call, both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One boast full HD screens. Yes that's 1,920x1080 pixels, just like the full HD goggle box in your living room. In this case, it depends on what you want. For pixel density and therefore clarity, the HTC One boasts a score of 468ppi whereas the Samsung can 'only' manage 441ppi. Both scores far surpass the iPhone 5's Retina Display.

In terms of technology, the Galaxy S4 uses Green AMOLED technology to lower power consumption, which is a good thing when the size of the display is a whopping 5in. We're talking nearly Samsung Galaxy Note territory. The HTC One is a slightly more manageable 4.7in and uses SLCD technology.

Technically this fight is a draw because, while the HTC One is more detailed and more pocketable, you may crave the impact of a bigger screen. Either way, the detail will be superb, the brightness more than adequate and the colours vivid. It just depends on whether you like the HTC One's more subtle colours and more palatable display or the bolder colours and bigger screen of the S4.

Battery Life : Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One

Battery life is always a tough call because no two people will have the same user habits. Regardless of how big a battery is, spend loads of time on YouTube streaming HD videos and you will soon know about it.
Let's look at the numbers, though. For the HTC One, you get a 2,300mAh battery that can't be removed. For the Samsung, it's 2,600mAh and can be removed. Expect about a day of solid use before plugging either device into the mains while you sleep.

Camera : Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One

Megapixels mean little if a camera doesn't know how to use them. Fortunately for you, the HTC One's UltraPixel system provides pretty good low-light performance, accurate colours and the capability to capture fast-moving objects and scenes. It can also record impressive 1080p video footage. As phone cameras go, the HTC One is very well blessed and we doubt anyone would be disappointed with the results.

Samsung has opted to keep things simple with a bog-standard MP count of 13. Not the most out there but definitely competitive with the Nokia PureViews and UltraPixel variants of the world. Detail is impressive, colours are spot on and, as with most recent flagship phones, the low-light capability is vastly improved versus the Galaxy S3. In terms of features, the S4 can record both cameras at once using Dual Shot, merge photos taken from the two cameras at the same time and can even record up to nine seconds of sound while capturing a photo.

Knowing the stakes are high, the winner here is an especially tough choice. We're going to call the HTC One the victor here based on the quality of the shots from both devices we've seen so far and mainly because we can't see Dual Shot being used all that much.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One

Some Extended Features : Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One

In terms of extended features, the HTC One comes with an impressive 32GB of storage, HTC's greatly improved Sense 5 user-interface and a home screen that is basically Flipboard. It looks a little like it came from Windows Phone, thanks to sizable tiles packed with images and information, and therefore all the better for it. Simplicity is sometimes what Android needs and the One really tries to plonk the essentials in an easy to find location. Even so, you can still customise to your heart's content if you so desire.

Samsung has decided to build on the S3's out-of-the-box functionality. Smart Stay – now known as Smart Pause – eyeball tracking is back, along with proximity feature Air View. Basically, it's the equivalent of hovering your mouse pointer over something. By keeping your finger near but not touching the screen, you can manipulate certain functionality such as hovering over Google images so you see a larger version without actually clicking it. The same can be applied to swiping, too. Rounding off is the S Health app, which lets you keep tabs on your exercise routine and health using the S4's array of new sensors – including temperature and moisture tracking.

We questioned the need for those extras on the Galaxy S3 and we are still unsure whether the S4 benefits from having them, although Air View could prove useful in a number of situations. Therefore the victory goes to the Galaxy S4 – unless you crave a focus on simplicity, in which case, the HTC One is for you.

Suggestion To Buy : Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One

If we counted up the wins, the score resides at a nail-biting 3-3 draw. In some ways that's a good thing because it highlights the brilliance of the Galaxy S4 and how much HTC has learned to allow it to release what quickly became our current smartphone of choice.

The S4 can't hold a candle to the stylish and Flipboard-enthused HTC One. It's fresh, well designed and it could take a knock or two before warranting an expensive repair bill. But it's a little less powerful, if that matters to you, and the screen is detailed but a tad smaller. If you prefer your Android experience a little more garish and vanilla, the S4 is for you ─ if you can put up with another bout of plastic.

Both phones are worthy of your money, but, assuming our review goes the way we think it will, the HTC One will hold onto its crown until the iPhone 5S.

Nokia Lumia 920 Features

Posted By: Poketors - January 13, 2013
Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 are now available in India also. These models have been launched recently in Indian market. The Lumia 920 will cost Rs 38,199 while the Lumia 820 will cost Rs 27,559. Both these phones will are available in stores now. The Lumia 620 was also showcased at the Mumbai launch, however the device will hit the stores in February and the price for this was not revealed.

Nokia Lumia 920 Features
Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820

It is being sold reasonably well in USA and Europe, though not as much as Samsung’s Galaxy S3 or even Galaxy Note 2. There is no doubt that it is the finest handset available with the Microsoft software. The handset comes with many brilliant features. For the display, it has a 4.5-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen that packs 768 x 1280 pixels at 332ppi. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2 technology for not enduring scratches in mild drops and others. It makes use of Nokia’s PureMotion HD+ and ClearBlack for higher clarity.

Key features of the Nokia Lumia 920

  • a curved 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ screen,
  • a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 CPU with 1 GB RAM with Windows 8
  • 32 GB disk space and 7 GB storage in the cloud with SkyDrive for users.
Nokia also promises a bigger 2,000mAh battery which is expected to last 10 hours with 3G. The Lumia 920 has NFC, integrated wireless charging and an 8.7 megapixel rear PureView camera with HD video. The phone also has “Super Sensitive Touch,” which will let users handle their smartphone even while wearing gloves.

Lets look at the features in details :

Camera: Undoubtedly the best feature. Nokia Lumia 920 has a camera which really makes itself different from any other smart phone avilable in this range. This is significant given the importance of pictures in the mobile market. From Facebook’s Poke app to Instagram, smartphone users are using their phones heavily to take and share pictures.

The Nokia Lumia 920′s camera takes blur-free images even when it’s dark and there is no flash on.

Stabilization of Optical Image : Even while recording videos with a shaky hand, this feature was also pretty impressive. Comparing a video shot from the Lumia 920 to a video from an HTC 8X (another Windows 8 phone), one could clearly see the difference in the quality of recording. The stability of the video on the Nokia Lumia 920 is great.

The Smart Shoot feature is another aspect that deserves mention. It allows you to point the lens at one object while taking a photo and if other people tend to walk into the picture, you can edit them out. It’s worth noting that you don’t have to download any apps to use these features.

Cinemagraph : This is one feature of the Lumia 920 and 820 . Smartphones aren’t just about consuming, they are also about doing random, crazy stuff and this feature of the camera lets you do just that. Users can convert a picture into a GIF, by simply taking a still picture, and then animating parts of the image. This is seamless and integrated into your camera.

Microsoft Office : This is again a big positive feature in the smartphone. The fact that the app comes free and installed is good, especially for those who can’t give up Office. You can link it to SkyDrive and thus your other Word Documents as well. The fact that all features of Office from PowerPoint Presentation to Excel are available should make it appeal to those who constantly need access to their documents.

Typing is also easy, with the predictive text working admirably fast.

Photo Sharing : A comparatively negative feature. For example, while sharing a picture from the Nokia Lumia 920, via Bluetooth, the only share options visible are Messages and One Note. The phone that we were looking at may not have had all the apps installed but that fact that it only showed Bluetooth as a share option when Bluetooth was switched on, was frustrating.

In an Android, Bluetooth is always visible as a sharing option even if it is not on. One of the most prominent things on any Android or iOS device is the number of varied sharing options. The other part is that the share symbol is hardly prominent in Lumia devices. Hiding a symbol that a lot of people click on, almost as soon as they take a picture, is a big negative.

The Live Tiles : These are another feature that we’ve heard both Microsoft and Nokia go on and on about. The idea behind Live Tiles is that you can personalize them and both companies have been playing the “No more boring icons like Android and iOS” card. You can choose to make a particular tile big or small depending on how important it is to you. For instance, you can make WhatsApp very large and hide games if that’s what you want.

Except that this doesn't really work as well as you’d think it would. If you click on a tile, a pop-up appears which allows you to stretch the tile. By instinct, you would want to stretch the expand icon as much as you can. But the truth is that there are only three default sizes.

Changing the size of Live Tiles can be a bit confusing, especially if you’re an extensive mobile web user, used to clicking on a space in-order to expand it. Personally, the Live Tile feature is something you can live without and the cleaner icon look that’s available on Android and iOS is certainly preferable.

If you want to buy : Amazon is offering Lumia in affordable prices. Grab you Lumia 920 in cheapest price ever. You can also check Lumia 520 or Lumia 720. Prices are really cheap compared to any other online stores.

So is the phone worth it? In terms of offering something new, Nokia’s Lumia 920 does that as far as hardware is concerned. The camera is excellent. However no idea whether it would stand when comparing with recent upcoming android smart phones. What do you think guys?
