Google Gives Better Rank For Secured Websites

Posted By: Arin Dey - August 14, 2014
Webmasters and bloggers do hardly care about making the website secured by HTTPS. But it is the time when all should look into this. Google has officially announced that sites secured with HTTPS and SSL will now get better positions in search rankings. We had speculations about HTTPS being one of the factors in ranking better. But as Google confirmed that it is a good time to switch and grow your sites visibility over net.

Google said, "Over the past few months we've been running tests taking into account whether sites use secure, encrypted connections as a signal in our search ranking algorithms. We've seen positive results, so we're starting to use HTTPS as a ranking signal."

Google Gives Better Rank For Secured Websites

It is true that secured factors give websites a little heads up. As per Google, the heads up have an impact about 1% of global search queries that as a whole makes it less important than other major SEO factors such as quality content, back-links etc.

Even though this factor contributes little, still Google thinks it as very important. Also the post added that they "may decide to strengthen" the factor so that more webmasters, bloggers, website owners are encouraged to switch from HTTP to HTTPS and keep everyone safe on the web while browsing.

Here are some useful tips :

Google has been asking website owners since long that it is safe to switch from HTTP to HTTPS but you have to make sure your traffic doesn't get affected in this. It means that you have to update Google that you moved your site from HTTP to HTTPS. Google revealed that it will keep releasing more documentation in the future, and as of now here are few tips:
  1. Decide the kind of certificate you need: single, multi-domain, or wildcard certificate
  2. Use 2048-bit key certificates
  3. Use relative URLs for resources that reside on the same secure domain
  4. Use protocol relative URLs for all other domains
  5. Check out our site move article for more guidelines on how to change your website’s address
  6. Don’t block your HTTPS site from crawling using robots.txt
  7. Allow indexing of your pages by search engines where possible. Avoid the noindex robots meta tag.
Now its your turn to switch from HTTP to HTTPS and share your experience. Please leave your comments here after moving to HTTPS.

Google Acquires Texting And Virtual Assistant App Emu

Posted By: Arin Dey - August 07, 2014
Google acquired another startup in texting and virtual assistant segment. The text-messaging app is Emu. This deal was done with an undisclosed amount to boost up Android messaging, Google Now or Hangouts and some other Google messaging services.  Emu comes with a built-in virtual assistant and its ready to shut down on August 25 as its team of developers heads to Google’s Mountain View offices.
Google Acquires Texting And Virtual Assistant App Emu

brief post on the Emu blog says “Hey, did you hear? We’re joining Google”. “That’s right! And we’re super-excited. But to focus on our next chapter, we have to close the last one.”

It means the iOS app will no longer be available in the App Store and existing users will no longer be able to send, receive, or download messages. The post also added “We know it’s an inconvenience, and we regret that”.

Emu uses artificial intelligence which is basically machine learning and natural language processing to understand messages. It includes relevant information to help the user plan a lunch date, reserve a table, buy movie tickets, or share their location in real time. Emu started its journey in 2012 by tech veterans Gummi Hafsteinsson and Dave Feldman. Hafsteinsso is the former vice-president of product for Apple’s Siri and was also senior product manager at Google. Feldman was instrumental in the design of Yahoo Messenger for Windows and for the iPhone. He also worked at AOL for sometime.

EMU received funding of $1.5 million from Kleiner Perkins, TriplePoint Capital, Menlo Ventures, DFJ, and additional angel investors. Lets see how Google makes EMU interesting to Android users.

Posted By: Arin Dey - July 03, 2014
Google Chrome has been the user friendly and widely used internet browser in the world. A lot of features are embedded into it to serve its users better and better. It is updated in a regular basis to protect users with security measures and fixing the bugs. But we often see some errors while updating. Sometimes you might see an error when trying to check for updates in Google Chrome's "About Google Chrome" box.
Google Chrome "Update Server Not Available" Errors
Here are the error codes that you usually get during Chrome update.

1. Update server not available (error: 1)

Issue : It means that Google Chrome can't be upgraded in its current directory.

Solution : You have to check which version of Google Chrome you're running by looking at the version number in the About Google Chrome box.

If the box lists something other than "Google Chrome" (e.g. "Chromium"), then this error is expected. Only Google Chrome supports updating. You can download Google Chrome from http://www.google.com/chrome. Chromium is what you get if you download the source code and build the browser yourself, or copy a build from someone who built it from the source.

2. Update server not available (error: 3)

Issue : It means that Google Chrome fails to communicate with Google Update.

Solution : You have to check if you're running Vista/ 7 and you have configured Google Chrome to always run as administrator. This is a known issue with the Google Chrome auto-updating mechanism and can be avoided by simply running Google Chrome as a normal user.

3. Update server not available (error:4)

Issue : It means some unexpected issue.

Solution :  Check the details in help forum.

4. Update server not available (error: 7)

Issue : It means the update was downloaded successfully, but it failed to install properly.

Solution : You can try restarting your computer. Then check your Windows Task Manager and see if GoogleUpdate.exe or GoogleUpdateOnDemand.exe appears in the list of processes. Then you can try updating again through the browser again.

Checking for update never completes

In case you observe the message "Checking for updates" and a little icon that spins forever, it means that Google Update was unable to communicate with Google Chrome.

The ultimate solution for this issue is you must be using the latest version of Google Chrome, You can download from http://www.google.com/chrome.

If these steps don't fix the problem, you are required to report the problem to Google Chrome team and wait for an update on that issue.

Google's Secret HREF LANG Webmaster Feature Update

Posted By: Arin Dey - July 02, 2014
Google was looking for beta testers to sign non-disclosure agreements, if they wanted to participate in the beta of this update. This has been a secret project from Google. Google is working on a new webmaster feature around rel-alternate-hreflang which is the attribute to communicate to Google if there are alternative language based web pages for the specific web page the attribute is placed on. It can be confusing for bigger sites to use this, or even small ones. Therefore, Google is working up new ideas on this feature implementation.

John Mueller of Google said they are "working on something neat" around rel-alternate-hreflang and want some beta testers. In case you want to try it, you need to sign an NDA and be willing to test it on your site. Find below the post by Mueller.

Below is a screenshot of the webmaster update :

How To Avoid Google Penalty For Thin Content

Posted By: Arin Dey - June 28, 2014
Thin content is low-quality content. This is considered as the most annoying matter for smart SEOs and marketers. Google realized that people were pouring the database with low-quality posts with hot keywords, backlinks and duplicate content in search of cheap traffic. It can be possible that your site may even have some thin content, whether you meant it to be that way or not. Not a single website is perfect worldwide and it’s very common for lower-quality posts or pages to be hiding amongst your higher-quality stuff. These thin contents can hurt your website in search rankings.

Definition Of Thin Content?

Thin content or shallow page is a web page with no real value besides building traffic. It contains no great insights into the industry, no good information about your product or no useful link.

When Google searches for shallow page or thin content, it basically looks for :
  • Duplicate content
  • Lots and lots of images on one page
  • Pages with lots of affiliate links
  • Automatically generated content
  • Article syndication
  • Doorway pages
How to Identify Thin Content ?

Google  always suggests that you should check with your friends and family members for the posts you have in your blogs. Confirm whether the posts are really useful for any of them at all. This is the easiest way to identify thin content.

Even Google Webmaster Tools can show notifications if there’s a thin content problem. However, it’s better to be proactive. You can also consider using one of these thin content identifier tools :

Google Analytics: You have to use the exit rate to sort on the “Review All Pages” section, and look at pages with a 75 percent bounce rate or higher. See the content on those pages, which are failing to keep viewers' attention.

Screaming Frog: You have to use the URL scrape tool and then sort the exported URLs by word count. If you have a lot of pages with fewer than 250 words, you have a problem.

Open Site Explorer: Always check the backlinks on your site and where they’re coming from. Also note the social media statistics to see if your pages are resonating with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other users.

What To Do When Discovered Thin Content?

You have to be the editor by your own as this entire process would be lying on your shoulder. However, if you see potential in the page then you can put in the time to improve it.

Find below a must-do list after discovering thin content :

1. Modify & Rewrite

Low valued page or thin copy can be improved with a decent modification and rewrite. If you don't find the way to improve it then you may hire a content writer, which is a costly affair. Decide what keywords you are targeting, and always aim for at least 300 words per page. Emphasize on your product, your services, or what makes you unique.

2. Merging Pages

Sometimes we write similar contents or partially same topic in our different post. Better you think of merging your pages so that you have one page with unique content, rather than more with thin content.

3. Interactive Content Writing

Interactive content can be a great help to engage readers and improve metrics on a page, which will lead Google to look into your page and give some value to it. Interactive content include:
  • Interactive FAQs
  • Surveys
  • Quizzes
  • The ability to “favorite” something on the page
  • Embedded Google Maps
4. Reducing Internal Links

In case, you have a page with huge number of internal links and you do think that the content on the linked pages are useful and doesn't require rewriting, better to eliminate some of those links.

5. Remove Duplicate Pages

Identify the duplicate content pages in your blog and try to eliminate all of them. This will resolve the issue of pages being exact copies of one another, and it should also help with SEO aspects.

Say "No" to Thin Content For Future Also

Once you followed all the steps mentioned above, make sure you revisit your site’s content on a regular basis to ensure you are not continuing to post thin content to the site in future. Each and every post should have real content value so that readers would be interested in your future posts.

Google's Next Android Release : "Android L" Features

Posted By: Arin Dey - June 27, 2014
This post will give you an advance look at the upcoming release for the Android platform, which offers new features for users and app developers. This post provides an introduction to the most notable android release. Android has grown from a small initiative to the world's dominant mobile OS platform with over a billion active users. Google keeps Android always up-to-date and has just unveiled what it calls the most ambitious Android release yet.

Google's Next Android Release : "Android L" Features
Here are some of the most exciting new features of Android L.

User Interface - Material Design :

The Android L includes support for material design apps. Material design is a comprehensive guide for visual, motion, and interaction design across platforms and devices. Android will receive a complete visual overhaul aimed at promoting a consistent experience across Android device sizes and types.

Material Design - Android L

This support includes below features :
  • Unique material theme
  • View shadows
  • The RecyclerView widget
  • Drawable animation and styling effects
  • Material design animation and activity transition effects
  • Animators for view properties based on the state of a view
  • Customizable UI widgets and app bars with color palettes that you control
Modified Notification Settings :

The notification system allows users to keep informed about relevant and timely events in your app, such as new chat messages from a friend or a calendar event. You will be able to interact with notifications more easily in Android L.

Notification - Android L

The visual and functional update includes :
  • Visual changes to notifications as part of material design
  • Notifications are now available on the device lockscreen, yet sensitive content can still be hidden behind it
  • A new presentation format called Heads-up for receiving high priority notifications while using the device
  • Cloud-synced notifications - act on a notification on your Android tablet and it is also dismissed on your phone.
Lockscreen Notifications :

Lockscreens can show notifications. Users can select via Settings whether to allow sensitive notification content to be shown over a secure lockscreen or not. All the notifications and their actions are bridged over to Android Wear devices by default.

Improved Battery Performance :

Android L will be having battery life better than its earlier versions. But Google's moves go beyond that to the app development stage, for which new tools have been developed that let developers track battery drain and optimise apps before they ever reach end users. The battery saver mode is similar to those implemented by third parties so far. The services can be turned off or made to run only at intervals in order to save power.

Advanced Camera Capabilities :

The new version introduces the new advanced camera features to facilitate fine-grain photo capture and image processing. You can now programmatically access the camera devices available to the system and connect to a specific device.

Easy Web Browsing :

A change can be noticed to the way individual tabs and documents in apps are handled by Android L. They'll now show up as individual entries in the Recents menu unlike its previous releases. This will allow users to jump directly between them.

New Android Runtime (ART) :

The version 4.4 release introduced a new, experimental Android runtime (ART). In Kitkat, ART was optional, and the default runtime remained Dalvik. With the L Developer Preview, ART is now the default runtime. ART is 64-bit compatible, and is also engineered to allow apps to work across hardware architectures such as ARM and X86. This also means that Android devices will be able to address more RAM than the 32-bit limit allowed.

Graphical Support For OpenGL ES 3.1 & Android Extension Pack :

Andorid L includes Java interfaces and native support for OpenGL ES 3.1. In addition to OpenGL ES 3.1, this release provides an extension pack with Java interfaces and native support for advanced graphics functionality. These extensions are treated as a single package by Android. Google has worked with major hardware vendors to enable more fluid graphics, potentially paving the way for new Android-based game consoles and set-top boxes.

Google Fit :

People nowadays are more keen on keeping health fit and fine. The new Google Fit framework will take Apple's Healthkit head on, tying into sensors on phones themselves as well as connected accessories to collect data which will be ready for apps to use. Major partners including Nike, Adidas, Runkeeper, HTC, Asus, LG and Motorola are already on board.

Better Android TV Apps :

Android offers pretty good experience that's optimized for apps running on large screen devices, such as high-definition televisions. Apps on TV offer new opportunities to delight your users from the comfort of their couch.

Below is a video which will show the Android L new look.

We have seen the performance and popularity of all the earlier released versions of Android and all of them did well in the market. Lets see how the new Android L makes noise in smartphone industry.

Posted By: Arin Dey - June 26, 2014
Google has been the number 1 choice in search engine space. It has also been observed that when it comes to search engine rules modification, Google has made a lot of changes on various SEO aspects. All of us who do SEO practices, spend most of our time optimizing for Google. It's also recommended and absolutely correct considering Google owns more than two-thirds of the market. But what about the search engines other than Google? What about Bing and Yahoo that occupy the rest of the space? Why is it necessary to optimize for these search engines also?
Why Do You Need Bing And Yahoo Optimized Site?
Search Engine Optimization practices should be done for all search engines. But as per normal practice most of us do is Google Search Optimization. SEO practice for Google takes up a lot of time and effort. What do you do whether to spend time on other search engines such as Bing and Yahoo? or only Google will be enough for your site?

Heads Up For Bing & Yahoo :

Spending time to optimize your site for Bing & Yahoo will definitely give you positive result for your site performance. Doing this you are not wasting your time rather you are spending your valuable time by investing it. Google is notorious for bringing out Pandas and  others which can kill a website if it is not taken care properly.

Consider spending time for Google, which definitely take much more time but consider spending some extra time along with Google also for optimizing Bing and Yahoo as well. Now the question is : who is actually using Bing and Yahoo? These two engines share almost 30% of the total searches between then, and that's a significant figure which can be taken care as well.

Search Preferences, Strategy, Statistics and Facts :

Developing SEO strategy and preferences for the demographics of Yahoo and Bing would definitely help you to get the market. You can figure out who is using these engines and then you can create strategies that are specific to that demographic.  A study was done by an internet marketing company WebpageFX. According to this company, a persons' educational background and political affiliations might effect their search engine preference. The study is limited to the US, but it can show how search preferences vary with location. It also reported that the Bing and Yahoo are most popular in states such as North Dakota, West Virginia, Ohio, and Arkansas within US. These are the few areas where Google is less popular than in other states. If your business is based on audience from the US, you can make use of the study which can give you some useful help. Its always good to know the people who are looking for what kinds of information on each search engine can be a great help in determining how to optimize differently for Google, Bing and Yahoo.

How These Search Engines Are Linked :

From the discussion above, we know that it's important to optimize for Yahoo and Bing. But how can a person manage all of the three search engines at a time? Its easy. Many of us have confusion that Yahoo and Bing are totally different search engines. But the fact is that Yahoo search is powered by Bing. So overall, you'll have to optimize for Google and one more search engine i.e. Bing. Google and Bing algorithms are similar in some ways. For example, if any site is having high number of quality dofollow backlinks then it will be important to Bing and Google both.

Search engines should be optimized properly and along with that it's important to focus more on your content. Hope this article helps you to understand the importance of these search engines. Suggestions and comments will be welcomed if any other information you have.

Google's Self Driving Car Has No Steering Wheel, Brakes

Posted By: Arin Dey - May 28, 2014
Google has been in news for its self-driving car since years. recently they launched a prototype that has no steering wheel, brake pedal or accelerator. Instead of those, software and sensors take the place of human abilities. It is also built not only to operate safely and autonomously but to take you where you want to go at the push of a button.

Google's Self Driving Car Has No Steering Wheel, Brakes

Project director Chris Urmson said in a blog post that “Ever since we started the Google self-driving car project, we’ve been working toward the goal of vehicles that can shoulder the entire burden of driving. Just imagine: You can take a trip downtown at lunchtime without a 20-minute buffer to find parking. Seniors can keep their freedom even if they can’t keep their car keys. And drunk and distracted driving? History.”

Urmson also added that “It was inspiring to start with a blank sheet of paper and ask, ‘What should be different about this kind of vehicle?’ We started with the most important thing: safety. They have sensors that remove blind spots, and they can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections"

Google Appoints Fashion & Marketing Expert For Glass Project

Posted By: Arin Dey - May 19, 2014
Google has taken up the Glass project seriously as it appointed fashion and marketing expert Ivy Ross to boost up Google Glass in the hopes the former chief marketing officer at Art.com, the Web’s largest retailer of wall art, can make the glasses interesting for diversified customers from IT industry to normal non-IT professionals. The fashion designer has taken up this project and hopefully she will make the computerized spectacles as sleek, chic and appealing as possible.
Ivy Ross
Ivy Ross explained about the new job role in a Google+ post :

With your help, I look forward to answering the seemingly simple, but truly audacious questions Glass poses: Can technology be something that frees us up and keeps us in the moment, rather than taking us out of it? Can it help us look up and out at the world around us, and the people who share it with us? I have spent my career–Calvin Klein, Swatch, Coach, Mattel, Bausch & Lomb, Gap and, most recently, Art.com–at the intersection of design and marketing, trying to answer questions like this in different ways, for different products. But Glass is especially cool, as no one has really tried to answer them with a product like this before. That’s our job, Explorers! I’m just getting started on Glass, but, because of all of you, and your thoughtful and smart feedback, I feel like I have an incredible head start. And I look forward to learning even more from you, and experiencing Glass together.

Google has already made Glass available to all American buyers as long as the wearable computer remains in stock. The Glass is priced at $1,500 only.

Google said in a recent Google+ post that “We’re ready to keep meeting new Explorers, and we can’t wait to hear all your experiences and feedback to continue to make Glass even better, ahead of our wider consumer release.”

As of now here is a short story of Google Glass effect on market. Google last opened up its Explorer program for 24 hours the morning of April 15 and sold out of all colors — cotton, sky, charcoal, shale and tangerine —by day’s end. Google officially unveiled the glasses during its I/O conference in the summer of 2012. At that time, the headset, which was controlled by head movements, had video and audio capability and a built-in compass and accelerometer.

Google has made several changes to the device, both technically and cosmetically.

Titan stated “At Titan Aerospace, we’re passionate believers in the potential for technology (and in particular, atmospheric satellites) to improve people’s lives. It’s still early days for the technology we’re developing, and there are a lot of ways that we think we could help people, whether it’s providing internet connections in remote areas or helping monitor environmental damage like oil spills and deforestation. That’s why we couldn’t be more excited to learn from and work with our new colleagues as we continue our research, testing and design work as part of the Google family.”

Google told The Wall Street Journal that Titan will work on Project Loon which is balloon-powered Internet endeavor to bring the Internet to the two-thirds of the world’s population with no connection. Titan may also work on the Makani project which is a development for an airborne wind turbine to produce energy more efficiently. Titan is best known for its Solara 60 drones which is a featherweight aircraft manufactured using thousands of solar cells that enable it to fly at an altitude of 65,000 feet for years without refueling. Yahoo launches its Web-based video platform in the coming weeks as per some internet sources report. Its been long Google's YouTube has been dominating the world web video database now it seems that there is another entrant which may give Google a tough competition.

Yahoo Launches Its Web-based Video Service

Yahoo's video service will be like a more elite version of YouTube. It will be only with high-quality and popular video content that will be selected and approved by Yahoo itself, Re/code is reporting.

The search engine firm will release the platform in the future but not now according to the report. Yahoo is basically borrowing its idea for Google's YouTube-like service. It came to know that Yahoo is trying to recruit some of YouTube’s most popular stars with promises of higher advertising revenue and guaranteed advertising rates with better remuneration. No idea where these are rumors or not but it is also heard that channel owners will receive more marketing with some even being featured on Yahoo’s home page.

It is not a new or unexpected effort from CEO Marissa Mayer because she has put major focus on the improvement of the company’s social offerings and she has been doing it since last year. This video service is going to generate more online advertising revenue. No clue received whether it will be linked to Yahoo News which is being headed by popular TV news personality Katie Couric. It is also reported in some sources that Yahoo may nab popular entertainment host Ryan Seacrest for its promotion and marketing purposes.
