What Are SEO Friendly URLs?

Posted By: Poketors - November 03, 2011
Bloggers are usually concerned about their websites because they always think whether they have good URLs which are very much user friendly or not. In fact a lot of bloggers do change the URLs regularly for better SEO impact. But the thing is that this is not at all recommended to change the URLs as it hardly impacts on SEO.
What Are SEO Friendly URLs?
Credit : Google Image
How does it impact on changes made for URLs :

Most of the bloggers prefer making SEO friendly URLs before launching it. And doing this is not wasting time as it directly has an impact on website traffic. So it is always recommended to make you website's URLs SEO friendly.

Sometimes we can ignore the changes when we feel that the URL is not that much bad in terms of SEO concerns because we may have loss of traffic and damage our website.

Some of the reasons for changing URLs slightly are mentioned below:

1. Changes of Keywords

We are aware of the following link type:
http://example.com/product.php?id=12345&color=2&size=2&session=54321
It is not like that where Google won't find the URL but it is not user friendly as it has no keywords in it. Google will list it in its search engine with dynamic id and session but it is difficult to remember. So for SEO point of view these type of URLs should have to be changed.

Now consider the URL below :
http://example.com/blog.php?topic=how-to-swim
With the following one :
http://example.com/blog/how-toswim
Now the question is that, which can be considered as the best one. Though both the URLs are having keywords but a little difference is there. We suggest to go for second option if your blog is new and under construction. It requires specific URL. And if your blog is already have a good status in Google search or in the web and it is established already then either of them would work. No matters which one you use.

2. Structure of the URL

Most of the bloggers have an idea that the page with the category URL would better work in Google search as per as the SEO is concerned. But this is not at all the real scenario as Google will take time to list the page which is having sub page inside a category from the main domain, which makes an URL unnecessarily big where Google always prefer short URL. It is not at all recommended to publish an article which is some steps away and separated by pages from main domain. See the example below.
http://example.com/health/fitness/how-to-swim
is not at all a better URL than the following one
http://example.com/how-to-swim
3. Length of the URL

In many cases this is overlooked but in fact this is the most important thing when publishing a content with the URL. We suggest to have some simpler and short URL. Though all the internet browsers support at the maximum limit of characters which you will never reach but still for better ranking in search result you should maintain some user friendly and short URL.

Longer URLs have disadvantages as follows:
  • Normally most of the social media applications cut off the URL.
  • If it is not user friendly then there is always a possibility of cut off while copy pasting the link by users
  • Longer URLs can not be remembered easily
  • CTR and usability are always affected in longer URLs
What would be a better way to shorten the URL?

Consider the following URL
http://example.com/blog/posts/all-posts/post-looking-for-making-coffee
In the above example we can see that some of the words are repeated unnecessarily. We can easily avoid the repeating words.
http://example.com/blog/posts/all/looking-for-making-coffee
So the above one is much more better and useful URL for SEO purposes.

4. How to go for Stuffing Keywords

Using more than one keyword in a post page is wrong. Consider the following URL which has got 2 keywords for the particular post:
http://example.com/health/fitness/swim-how-to-swim
The above URL is totally unaccepted in purpose of SEO and doesn't make you rank better as here you are unnecessarily stuffing keywords. Using 2 keywords in a same post title looks like a smappy URL and might not get listed in Google search sometimes. So better to focus on the important things as per SEO is concerned and not stuffing keywords in an attempt to get listed quickly.

5. Suggestions :

We have already explained why changing every URL of an established website is risky and it harms your site ranking but if you want to do it after all, make sure you are doing it properly. Some of the things that are really important when changing your URLs are mentioned below:
  • 301 redirects
  • On page links update
  • New XML sitemap
  • Old XML sitemap
301 redirects are the very important part while changing the website URLs. These links are most important to the search engine specially in Google bot and you should update all the links.

Keeping XML is always good but we should not keep both the old and new XML files. We can remove the old XML file after 2-3 days. The new links will be automatically crawled by Google bot and can get in Google search result. If your 301 redirects are working properly then there is no reason to think of some duplicate contents.

So we hope that you have got a detailed idea about the SEO friendly URLs.

7 Tips for Writing SEO Friendly Blog Post

Posted By: Arin Dey - September 25, 2011
Most of the bloggers write their articles or try to write in a way based on some optimization for search engines. Here writing SEO friendly blog posts is very much required along with the good content and moreover you need to understand how to use keywords in your posts so that they can be visible in search engines once search with those strings. Actually it helps to get a better ranking in search engines. SEO for the blog post is the key area where you have to put efforts to get huge traffic to your blog.

Below mentioned tips will be helpful in writing SEO friendly articles for your blog. These are commonly practiced techniques which are proved effective in search engines to find your keywords and rank your blog in better position. Here we go with our 7 strong tips:

1. Keywords should be used in blog's post titles
You should include your keywords in your blog post’s title/meta tags. As the search engines first search by the title description, which will bring your blog on page.

2. Keywords should be used in blog's subtitles and post headings
Always put a subtitle in your blog post or better break your post into paragraphs and use a heading for each paragraphs.

3. Headings attributes
Use H1, H2, H3 and so on may be in bold or italics too to format your subtitle and headings.

4. Keywords at the beginning and end of your post content :
Try using the same keywords as well as variations of that particular keyword (plural, different verb tense, and so on) at least two times within the first 100 words. These keywords should be included at the end of your blog post.

5. Keywords with links in your posts :
Get your keywords linked to another page or include your keywords with links within your blog pages. Always make sure that the keyword links you are putting in that particular post should be relevant to the link page or post else these can harm your site. Google might view them as spam as they are not at all relevant to your post content pages.

6. Keywords to name your images and in ALT tags :
Always use keyword names for the images used in your post and  better include them in the ALT tag of your image’s HTML code. Adding ALT should be relevant to the post else it will be treated as keyword stuffing by Google, which is nothing but a form of spamming.

7. Use Google Insights to Find the Best Search Terms :
Last but the most important in our opinion is Google Insight. Whenever you are not sure which terms to go with, always go for Google Insights. It is a web-based tool that compares the popularity of any search terms you want to know about. For example. if your blog is on technology but you are not sure whether the yet to be customers are likely to search for "tech" or "technology". Here Insight can suggest you which one is popular.

Done with the keywords usages and the specific SEO steps to bring you blog in the upper position. Now the blog posts will be SEO Friendly.

How To Protect Your WordPress Blog

Posted By: Arin Dey - September 23, 2011
We very often hear that someone has hacked or stolen the Blog user information and get into it and made a lot of changes which result in providing the ownership to the hacker. But you can secure your blogs by following some security measures using WordPress security features.

How To Protect Your WordPress Blog

Lets discuss on those 'Always' protection methods which will secure your WordPress blogs:

1. Always use latest WordPress version :

First and foremost thing you should is that update your WordPress to latest. If you are not using the the up-to-date version will cause a lot of trouble. Currently, the version is 2.3. So better to install the latest version and we need to keep track on the newest releases. Some releases were there recently for just security fixes like, SQL Injection. It may seem like doing a hectic job but in reality upgrading is really good for your blogs.

2. Always change your default password :

If you are using the same password provided via email to you at the time of installation to log into your wp-admin page then definitely we would suggest to change it now. Because the password provided is only 6 characters and it's alphanumeric. So there is a high possibility that your password may be hacked and you are in trouble. Better to avoid any kind of pain change the password to a complex string and keep more than 10 characters. DO NOT use words used in blog title, make it a nice mixture of letters, numbers, and special characters. One more thing you have to remember is that you should keep changing your password at the hosting site for your account login and the control panel logins, like cPanel. Make it a practice once in a month so your password will be secured.

3. Always use SSH/Shell instead of FTP :

The most important and widely used option. We would say that this one is the best option among all as we all know that SSH is a secured method of accessing files. In any case, if someone gets your FTP login information (usually not encrypted and easy to get) then they can do modifications to your files and add spam to your site without your knowledge. So better disable FTP (recommended) and start using SSH. Yo uwill find everything is encrypted including the transfer of files, and of course the login.

4. Always install LoginLock plugin :

Out of all available plugins, we would like to suggest you to use this plugin as this will automatically block the source IP address if somebody tries to log in your WordPress admin area after a certain number of attempts. LoginLock prevents spammers from continuously trying different combinations to crack your account password. It's the similar algorithm in which Windows works if you’re added in domain. LoginLock's locked out time is 1 hour default.

5. Always create a blank index.html file in your /Plugins/ directory :

WordPress plugins folder is completely visible to anyone by going to http://www.domainname.com/wp-content/plugins. Go ahead and create a blank document in your favorite editor and save it as index.html and upload it to the plugins directory. Now when you try to access it, you only get a blank screen. This prevents hackers from finding out a security hole in one of your plugins.

6. Always use .htaccess file to control access of wp-admin :
You can protect your WordPress admin folder by allowing access to it from a defined set of IP addresses. Everything else will bring up a Forbidden error message. In this case if you (only) access your blog from one or two places routinely, it’s worth implementing. Here you are supposed to create a new .htaccess file inside your wp-admin folder but do not replace the one at the root.

7. Always remove the version string from your header.php file :
It should be a normal practice to remove the version string so that in case you are running version 2.2 and the current release is 2.3, by default your blog always shows the used version i.e. 2.2 on every page and  here it will be very easy job for any hacker or spammer to crack into wp-admin.

8. Always block WP- folders from the search engines :
Needless to say this but sometimes we forget to do this. It is not required to have all of your Wordpress files to be indexed by Google. Therefore, the best thing would be blocking them in your robots.txt file. Add  Disallow: /wp-* to your list.

Hope the above steps will be useful to customize, maintain and protect your blogs. If you find some more additions to the above tips with more security measures which can be implemented for better protection of your blog, please share with us.

In this post we will be discussing about managing multiple blogs without getting confused among them that which one to mange and when. Some of the mostly practiced tips are explained here to help you manage multiple blogs.
How To Manage Multiple Blogs Effectively

The following 10 tips and suggestions would be taken as normal practice for your blogging in reaching your goal.

1. Should be Realistic/Responsible in managing multiple blogs

Here  this decision will be solely taken by you as only you know when and how much time and effort you can give to your blogs with your day to day schedule.

We can line up some quick tips for you:
a) amount of time you have for blogging,
b) writing style and speed,
c) regular update on each blog.

What we always suggest that better go for a new first blog and on success of that start a second one. And gradually with the 2 blogs if time permits then continue adding another one. But only opening a new blog will not get a good response from web unless you concentrate, spend time and keep regular updates on it.

2. Blog niche - Selecting the right one

This is the most important thing you should consider when opening a new blog. A lot of bloggers are mostly confused when they start a blog and consider a lot of things which include mainly the market demand. But we suggest you to go by your choice of interest and expertise on that. This will make your job easier because you have the capability as well as interest on that topic.
Here we must share some experience of building Poketors.com, we are basically concentrating on technology blogging  moreover the time we would like to gain tech news, updates, gadgets reviews, how-to guides & docs  and related events on internet. We started our blogs with multiple topics and tips and tricks in blogging, money making ideas and social media.

So once the bloggers started the blog they come to know about their interest and passion as time grows because time is the only thing which makes you realize the real fact. From multiple topics they choose their niche of blog. As a summary, if you write on the topics that you know well can also save time so that you can get engaged yourself in spending on research and attempting to know unfamiliar subjects that might become your niche of interest.

3. List of  post topics for your multiple blogs

This is actually on the basis of your blog's success on the area in which you have to keep ready with the new topics. Say, if your tech blog is getting much appreciation then you should research on that and you should get ready with the latest and unique posts which will be posted in future. Based on visitor's interest try new approaches to keep you blog fresh for both yourself and your readers. Moreover don't write a topic which will not be for any interest so whenever an idea strikes your mind note it down and write on it.

4. Schedule your posting for each blog

Know the frequency of your posting and based on that schedule it. Make a to-do list for each day in a week, which will keep you busy working on your blogs on regular basis rather than burdening on specific day, say: in weekend. It would be a great idea to create a writing schedule that will allow you to complete the desired posts with sufficient time to spare to keep you flexible in managing time.

5. Innovative and creative writing style

You should write on specific topics which will be unique, creative, and innovative. Moreover we can say that sometimes tech related topics become common but you should write it from your point of understanding. Never start writing apart from your niche and never force yourself to write on a topic just for the sake of posting an article. Write whenever you feel interested, inspired so your writing will be almost effortless and effective. Make the most of that interest by turning it to an opportunity to write an extra post or two everyday, which will boost up your interest for writing in your niche. Here you can get some extra posts at the end of each week, which will definitely motivate you writing some more.

6. Allow Guest Bloggers to post in your blog

This practice is now widely followed and other bloggers will welcome the opportunity to write a post for your blog. We would suggest to do this free as in return of this, you will get some back-links to their own blogs, and also you can offer AdSense revenue sharing program to them, which will be some added interest for them too. Always take advantage of new guest bloggers.

7. Blog Editor's suggestions

You can hire some blog editor for your blog as they would love to work on reasonable rate. And once your blogs is established and your blog monetizes then you will be able to hire a Blog Editor from your income to manage your multiple blogs.

8. Form a network with co-Bloggers

Try to explore the opportunity working with some regular co-bloggers who can share some of the responsibility for keeping your blogs updated on regular basis even if you are on vacation. You can offer a percentage of your Google AdSense ad revenues shares or in return write for the blogger's blog.

9. Have a single hosting account

Always have a single hosting account and host all your blogs in it. This will minimize your effort for opening multiple hosting accounts individually and managing each and every blog hosted on it.

10. Prioritize you blog

Make sure to prioritize your most important post get posted first. Because  that will be a milestone for your blogging and will boost up the numbers of readers.

Gradually you will be learning more and more on how to manager multiple blogs once you have multiple blogs and you have to maintain them as well.

5. If you want to show only Blog Post Title then replace it with following code:
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>
<title><data:blog.pageName/> | <data:blog.title/></title>
<b:else/>

</b:if>
For Blog Post Title followed by Blog Title option, replace the same tag with following code:

Blogging Or Job At MNC

Posted By: Arin Dey - July 08, 2011
We have posted in our previous article that blogging can be our source of income. A lot of webmasters now have made blogging as bread and butter. Now the question is how can we make it as our profession. Recently I have come across a big number of bloggers who blog just for money; they are live on blogging not only for passion, interest, fun but for source of income also.
Blogging Or Job At MNC

As we know that it is not an illegal professional so why not blogging? Why we very often get stuck in this profession. Yes! This question bothered me for sometimes but now I got some good answers. The answer is pretty simple : We don’t get stuck. Our will is reserved only for service. That’s why. Successful bloggers are generating dollars on their blogs by understanding the money making strategy. It’s is undoubtedly the new trend of money venturing in the web world. It is the simplest media by which we can work in our niche and reach our target customers by promoting products or services.

Blogging is an opportunity of becoming an entrepreneur because  we express our thoughts, interest, lifestyle, and opinion online without restriction and censorship. We can use blogs to generate revenues while we utilize all the information of Inter webs and as we write every thought we have in mind.
On the other hand, once you completed your graduation/engineering either looking for jobs at MNCs or doing MBA. Even after doing MBA, your will be searching for a good opportunity with big MNCs. But have you ever thought about making your own company? Yes! Blogging is like your own company. In MNCs, everything is tracked as when you come and when you leave. You need to report to any manager or need no permission to do anything. If you are going for leave, you have to apply in advance and according to availability you get it. So taking leave creates tension as you never understand the approval status for it. Just taking a cup of coffee and working doesn't make you happy in life. In MNCs, the income is fixed for a month depending upon the CTC.

But blogging breaks all barriers like if you want to earn more you need to work hard and blog more keeping your concentration of mind on your niche. Its like 365 days flexible job. No application for leave. In MNCs, we are like robots and run by the company itself. If you want some more from life you have to give some more to your life. Working for different companies has made us pay-contractor. We know the timing and a portion of work.  We come to office, stay at office and leave office on time.

But have you ever realized the closed system with a job at MNCs? Hopefully now you will start thinking. And now you may start your blog and start working 24/7 for your blog  whenever possible.

Now its your turn to decide to blog first or else job at MNC.

    Pro-Bloggers & Pre-Bloggers

Posted By: Arin Dey - July 08, 2011
Bloggers are known for their contents and niche of the topic. According to the use of the content writing style and experience, bloggers can be categorized into two groups – Pro-Bloggers & Pre-Bloggers. There is a basic difference between Pro-Bloggers and Pre-Bloggers. Let’s start with the definitions first :

Pre-Blogger: People who are thinking of starting up a blog and trying to understand what is involved in it.

Pro-Blogger: People who have one or more published blogs and bringing in a significant income.
    Pro-Bloggers & Pre-Bloggers
We would like to characterize the Pre-Blogger as standing beside the road wondering about learning bike riding. By comparison a Pro-Blogger is riding the bike on road but not falling down from it.

Unfortunately, the Pre-Blogger may have to fall down from bike and got hurt and slowly they can learn and become the Pro-Blogger. So there is nothing to say pro-bloggers as "pro-bloggers were also pre-bloggers once". Lets talk about pre-blogger.

Pre-Blogger should always keep the following things in mind:
    • Have patience as it takes time to get readers for your blog.
    • Setup your blog and domain with a good name which suits your site contents.
    • Focus on good content and use simple and understandable language.
    • Make sure that search Engines & directory can find your blog quickly
    • See the web statistics and monitor traffic for your domain
    • Post, post, post with short posts, and ping each time. This will generate a small amount of traffic each time you post.
    • Write occasional some techno based articles. A good target is one per week.
    • Think carefully about tags you wish to use. Spend time looking for the popular tags those others in your niche, and adjacent niches.
    • Look for queries from your blog readers that you can respond to quickly with a unique contribution. Find a way to get that unique contribution into the general blogosphere. That article will become a reference source in itself, and generate links and traffic over time.
    • Keep a list of topics for the future, and a number of posts that are “ready to go”.
There is experience available from successful bloggers (pro-bloggers), and most of them are willing to give advice. If you have done with the all above things properly then it’s time to see the result. Most of the well known bloggers were established professional in IT world and they left job at MNC and became successful blogger.

Richard Goodwin from HowtoStartaBlogOnline.net has writen an awesome post on How To Start A Wordpress Blog Online Step By Step Guide (With Pictures) where you will find the steps from acquiring a domain to hosting your blog on WordPress.
Enjoy blogging for the pleasure of writing new things by thinking and visualizing. Once you start blogging then you will get readers gradually and even pro-bloggers will be reading your blog  if you are posting unique and quality contents regularly.

    Blogging As Source Of Income

Posted By: Arin Dey - July 06, 2011
Blogging has been a passion and a topic of interest for most of the bloggers who are really active on blogging since years. But maximum percentage of them can't make money from their blogs due to lack of experience or not capable to produce a content which readers want or due to some drawbacks in SEO tricks . But some of them are really doing a great job and making thousands of $s in a day or month or a year depending on their performance on topic selection, writing capabilities and promotion of their blogs.

    Blogging As Source Of Income

There are a lot of reasons why people do start a blog. Among all of the reasons below points can be  taken as most of the bloggers' interest for blogging:

    1. Passion And Self Expression :  'Passion' is the first thing which can be considered as the 'why' factor for blogging. People have passion in different fields and different topics and they like to share their views. They just open an account with blogging platform and pen down with their favorite topics.

    2. Business Promotion : Small, medium or big companies are promoting their business, products or services through blogging via a blog or a website. They realize the niche in midst of the huge readers and accordingly they do target the readers to whom they can pass their new product or service information or offers and changes made by companies. This is the easiest way to reach people for promoting the business.

    3. Networking : Sometimes bloggers form connected social networks can share their posts containing good content and latest updates in various niches according to the readers' interests. They can get connected and share knowledge and time. Business also required close networking. Hence some people take advantages being in the network so that in future if needed they can start business.

    4. Recognition And Fame : Once a blogger is recognized, they pretend to be a well known name in the world of blogging. They write in various topics to keep the blog visitors enraged to the blogs and about them as ‘the blogger’. With time gradually by their recognition, they get fame as well and later on becomes a celebrity.

    5. Just For Fun : There are certain percentage of bloggers who write on random stuffs whatever comes to their minds without caring who is following/reading it or not. They keep blogging just they love to write. They consider it as entertaining thing in their life. We can say that they write  just for fun.

    6. Source Of Income : This is the main topic for which the article is. The large number of bloggers tend towards making money with their blogs. They can make money by putting ads in their posts which helps to monetize, which in turn good for the blogger and as well as the advertiser. So blogging has been taken as a money making media where bloggers think and post such contents which will make money and will also help affiliates to sell their product and services. Nowadays a lot of established professionals are leaving MNC and switching to blogging career.

Blogging as an income source is likely to disappoint the determined writers in initial days. However, there are many opportunities of earning from the blog itself that can enhance a bloggers income potential. Writing blogs is easy job but the blogs that are well thought over, contain good content raise its viewers automatically. Always keep in mind to avoid some of the common blog pitfalls (e.g., not writing regularly, poor grammar, etc.) can do well over time.

    Keep blogging :)

    Let's Start Blogging

Posted By: Arin Dey - July 06, 2011
Nowadays blogging has become one of the most preferred activity for the techies, IT professionals, doctors, film stars, film directors, politicians, school students and college-goers. The popularity and passion for blogging has influenced bloggers and has triggered a lot of budding bloggers and probloggers to boost up their interest in it and be a successful blogger. I can refer all of these bloggers as webmasters.

The hugely dominating field 'blogging' has its different platforms on which bloggers blog. Such as - Blogger, WordPress, Blog, TypePad, Tumblr, Live Journal and lot more. All the bloggers can see that a million of blogs being posted each day in different platforms. Maximum % of the bloggies community just blog as they have to write something or want to tell his/her friends, relatives that they also know blogging and what is the fun behind it. Couple of decades back also, people used to maintain diary and now also some people are still there who just want to be part of posting their life's snap shots and never care about who is reading it or not.

Bloggers must have the following prerequisites before they start blogging:

The Platform : Blogger has to choose the platform amongst a lot of available options in the web; like - Blogger, Wordpress, Blog, TypePad, Tumblr etc.

The Look And Feel : Blogger has to determine and fix a proper blog template from available various kind of sample template in the platforms. The look should be attractive and meaningful somewhat to your blogs. Using of different colors, styles make the blogs look professional and readable. If required you can change the template or style or you can also hire a designer who can design on behalf of you. So your readers can be more serious to your blogs.

The Content : The content should be fresh and the writing style should be unique. So that when the readers go through your blog they don't feel that the content is old one or copied from someone/some websites/blogs. Using simple words and simple presentation attract more readers. The writing style can make your blogs much more presentable and understandable. Not necessarily every blog should be liked by your readers and make them stay on your blogs. So, the more you post, the more chance you get to attract the eye of someone for related topics.

The Dedication : The most important thing for writing a good blog is dedication. You should be dedicated to your blog posts. You have to put in the time and effort to get very positive results. Dedication can hide the fact that you are a beginner and hence you need to put time and effort and update the posts regular basis. No matter how little experience you have, you can make your blogs successful with dedication.

I believe that the above four prerequisites are the basic needs for a blogger. Now its the time to start your own blog.
